A cardinal has at least 2 definitions:
1) A type of bird
2) A position in the Catholic church. As I understand it a priest is the leader of the local church. Several churches in an area make up a 'diocese' and the highest official in the diocese is a bishop. Cardinals are a step higher than bishops & I suspect have several dioceses they are responsible for.
3) There is also the term 'cardinal sin' but I'm not sure it's spelled the same. They are considered b some to be the worse types of sins, such as murder.
