At five weeks the kitten will most likely start to have his or her teeth, so you can try buying kitten chow and softening it with CatSip, which is a special milk for cats. Here in California many grocery stores carry it, and most pet stores should. If the kitten doesn't quite know what to do with the chow, try backstepping a bit and buy a little bottle and kitten formula (or CatSip) from the pet store and bottle feeding him/her for a bit. It takes a while to get the hang of that - I recommend trying to wrap the kitten in a soft towel and hold it as you would a baby. Use LOTS of patience and have paper towels handy, because it will be a mess!!! But your new kitten ought to be able to figure out softened food pretty soon :)

Don't give a 5 week old kitten solid food. They still need milk. A vet or pet store will probably have what you need. I found a stranded kitten a few months ago and have to feed him with an eye dropper and then a bottle. Its the only way it would eat until it got older and could handle solid food. Giving it solid food too soon can have very negative effects on a cat.

Listen to Cat, as she knows what she's talking about. Kittens will start to sample solid food as young as 3-4 weeks, even though they will still be nursing off mom. I used to start my kittens off on baby cereal mixed with kitten formula to get them used to the idea of food coming from somewhere other than mom. I started out with it fairly thin then thickened it bit by bit and finally going to canned and then dry kitten food. But the baby food meat is a great idea and probably better if the cat is already 5 weeks. I used a baby spoon and they would lick it off (sometimes it takes a while to catch on). Once they get the idea, give it in a bowl and you could start mixing the baby meat with dry cat food. (Please DON'T use Kitten Chow; use a high quality kitten food!) If your's is not eating, you may just need to experiment to find something they like, but I'm betting the baby food meat will do the trick.

Is he weaned? What does the vet say? You need to bring the kitten to the vet if you don't know how to care for a kitten! They need to be checked for parasites and other diseases and get vaccinated.
If he does not eat, it may mean he is not ready and he will get ill and die if he gets to dehydrated.
Some kittens may not eat dry food. I have an 8 week old kitten that wont touch it. I had to go to Petsmart and get him wet kitten food. Not alot of companies make canned kitten food so you may have to shop around.

At five weeks they should be starting to eat dry cat food. I've had some that try it at 3-4 weeks! Canned is better, though. They should be able to eat this without a problem. Baby food (meat) is also good and they love it!

little young to be from its mother but cats are smart-take kitten food mix with a little warm water to soften it up-you might have to hold the kitten and put a little in its mouth at first but it will catch on real quick-just pet it afterwards and it should do well-keep the peace old hippie

What I would say is feed it the canned cat food so it won't hurt itself. Don't go and buy the cheapest brand. Like Friskies is good for it(remembered canned food!). If no go, go to a vet for professional help.
