not sure where you're staying in Honolulu but i'm guessing it is around Waikiki. Parking rates in that area, even at the hotels, are totally ridiculous. We were there a few months ago and what we ended up doing was renting a car for 4 of the 10 days we were there. We rented with Enterprise who will pick you up from your hotel and drop you off after you have returned the car. We'd get picked up when the office opened and returned it end of the day. The amount you would spend on parking for one night would pay for one day's car rental. we alternated the days we spent around waikiki beach with the days we rented a car and ventured around the island. (one day doing pearl harbour. another day the dole pineapple plantation and north shore, etc.) I found this worked out really well. A lot of the bigger hotels, (Marriott, Hilton etc), have car rental agencies in the complex. We were staying at the Marriott where there was a Hertz office, but the reason we didn't rent from them is that the charge per day was about twice that of Enterprise.
Enjoy your vacation!

I echo the post of Bruddah bigwavehunter. If you have budgeted for the cost of renting a car, then by all means do so. You'll be able to venture into parts of the island unaccessable by bus or trolley. Also, cab fares are even higher ($35.00 not incl tip to get from the airport to downtown Honolulu). Car rental cost is rather high, but just is comparable to the cost of renting an automobile in any other metropolitan city in the United States.
Aloha from Waikiki.

If your staying in Waikiki you shouldn't because everything is in walking distance and besides got the bus. But I'd say like the first 2 or 3 days you should rent a car and go around the island and the last days just spend it in Waikiki. Thats what my cousin's do all the time when they come home to Hawai'i to visit. Good Luck and Have Fun.

I totally disagree with the other answers. I think it is well worth the money to rent a car. Not having one will limit you, especially on oahu. Many hotels have reasonable rates for parking, and if you slide the doorman/valet a few bucks and do a little dealing, you may end up parking for free. You can drive east from waikiki, around the blow hole to makapuu, then through kailua, over the pali back to waikiki. This is an awesome drive (1.5-2.5 hours) The other drive would be over the likelike hwy to kaneohe, head west to the north shore you will drive a two lane road all the way to waimea bay, to swim(awesome in summer). from here you can either drive back to waikiki on the freeway ( H1) or go back the way you came. Stop in haleiwa for lunch. Having a car will enable you to discover that O'ahu is a beautiful island. If you limit yourself to bus routes, and waikiki, you will feel like you are in a big city full of japanese tourists. Contact me for more info.

Aloha

Agree ... rent a car for a day or two. Only a few of the places on my web site below are easily reached by "the Bus". If you don't know where you are going 'the Bus' is a good round the island tour.

Having a rental car was the best part of our trip. You can go where you want, when you want. Drive around and explore. Everything is so beautiful. You can't just ask the bus to pull over because you want to take a picture.

Definately get a car.. Have been to the islands many times and though it may seem like a big cost, many companies offer special rates for long trem rentals. Also it allows you to explore the island and the many interesting areas. best of luck and enjoy.

i second bigwavehunter... you really should get a car for a 5 day vacation.. sure around Waikiki parking rates are expensive: park your car at the hotel and walk... nothing is that far away that you can't walk there around meals... there is sooooo much more to Hawaii than Waikiki... get a car, trust me.

I think it depends on where you are planning on going...If you are like me and love to shop, yes you would need somewhere to store your packages when you arms can't hold any more. Also how are you going to go mall hopping? Also If you want to check out places that are outside of Waikiki, it would definitely be worth it!
