Anything involving your particular skills that does not take a degree. I'm thinking here of craftsmanship, sales, art, music, etc. Also, there are many areas of self-employment where nobody cares what your credentials are, only your ability to provide the product or service they need.

Anything that takes a degree is also open to you once you find a school that will accept you based on other things than an impressive high school record.

I got my GED in 1965, after having dropped out of high school in 10th grade. Later, I was admitted to the University of Michigan mostly on the basis of good SAT scores, and did well there. I learned word processing back when it was brand new, which helped in everything subsequent. I even got into law school, but the financial considerations made that blow up after a year. Then I learned that I could be an excellent legal secretary, and spent 16 years in the same firm, before being laid off. Now I'm learning a whole lot of new software and preparing to start yet another career, hopefully as an Administrative Secretary for a non-profit foundation.

A GED does not limit you nearly as much as you might imagine.

Just about any job you can get with a high school diploma. Often what you know and the skills you can demonstrate are more important to an employer than mere formal credentials. You can be hired in construction. You can be a waiter or waitress in a restaraunt or even a cook. (There's nothing save money to keep you from owning your own restaurant.) You can be hired for retail sales. You can work for lots of major business chains. Go to work for Uncle Sam! You can start your own business (hire yourself!). Build websites!
Rex David "Dave" Thomas, founder and CEO of Wendy's got a GED. Actor and comedian Bill Cosby completed a similar program. See the link below to another Yahoo question-and-answers page for some examples of highly successful people who did not get a traditional high school diploma. More important than the mere acquisition of a college sheepskin is what you do with the education you have, your effort to acquire a good education on your own (education is a continuous process), and attitudes and actions you have regarding your work and your savings. Entering the job force early (without college), as long as you stay constantly employed, and saving and investing may for some people be the wiser use of time and effort.

I hope I don't sound degrading ,but most GED holders are going to get more manual laboring jobs. However, this can range anywhere from working at an economically driven business like a steel plant or paper mill to being a technician for a major utility company. I have to say, many non-college graduates are making just as much, if not more in some instances, money than college graduates. The main difference is college graduates have the paper to back up the salary demands and have more opportunity for advancement. However, you can still apply for cushier jobs like customer service rep, retail or managerial roles (like Wal-Mart). You get great benefits and stock options, too!

Most places that will accept a high school diploma will accept a GED, except for the military. The military feels that if you can't commit to something as simple as high school, then you would not take a commitment to the military, which is much more demanding then high school, at all seriously.

You can get a minimum wage job, with little or no future.

Actually even with a GED diploma ,you could be the President of a International Company and owner of the company. Some people have done as much with less education.

"DEPENDS ON YOUR MAJOR"?!?!?!?! You really can't do much with just a GED, it's close to imposible to support yourself working at a place like McDonalds. Your best bet is to give Community College a try. I wasn't successful in high school (frankly it sucked), but college is much better, and a community college is less intimidating. Plus it's cheaper. The difference in pay between someone with only a GED and any kind of college degree is absolutely amazing.

You can get a lot of different jobs with a GED. You can even join the military. It's better to go to college though, if you can. Even with a GED you can get accepted into a lot of community colleges and work your way into a university.

A GED is supposed to have a similar value to a high school diploma. Therefore, any job requiring a high school diploma should accept a GED.
