Because it is 2:02 A.M. and too flippin' hot to sleep.
Oh you mean why are we here on earth?
Read The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. He explains it better than I ever could.
Having said that, we are here because God has a plan for each and every one of us. He had a plan when he created the Garden of Eden and Adam and Eve. He had a plan when Lucifer was cast out of heaven (by a minor angel I might add). He had a plan for our salvation. He has a plan for our eternal life.
When I sit at the right hand of Jesus, I'll ask him in detail why we are here. Until then, I accept that I am here to fulfill my role in His plan.

a question that has been and will continue to be asked for generations to come. The journey is amazing, and as we examine our lives and what we've done, we look back and question, 'what was it all for?' all the we attained, everything we chased after, in the end meant nothing if we don't have a deeper understanding, relationship with God. All this 'stuff' will fade away, but that which is, will last forever. Communion with God

From a Mormon point of view, life is a test. We existed as spirit children of God in a place called the pre-mortal life. We passed certain qualifications in order to come to this earth, where we received physical bodies when we were born. We are here to learn to grow by faith (because we cannot remember that pre-mortal life), to learn how to control our appetites, to develop our talents, and to learn to serve God and those around us. At some point in time, we will be preparing to have families and continue growing. Someday we will pass through a Final Judgment and be rewarded with a degree of glory in accordance to what we know. People who have chosen to follow a path of sin without repenting and turning to the Lord Jesus Christ will receive a lesser degree of glory. However, as I said before, things are decided in relation to what we know. We have a saying in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that this life is the time to prepare to meet God. There is also room to have fun down here on earth, but it should be clean and appropriate fun, because as children of God we have amazing potential and there is much expected of us. After all is said and done, if we know how to love others as ourselves, all will be well with us. Have a happy day!

The universe is on a never-ending quest to attain ultimate chaos. Humans and life in general are just one of the many ways the universe works to attain that goal.

To fulfill the will of the Lord. Everyone does the Lord's will, whether they know it or not. Who can resist the Lord's will?
Nobody.
(Eph 1:9) Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
(Eph 1:10) That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
(Eph 1:11) In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Ask _The One Who_ put you here in the first place.
It's an almost 62 yo male who tells you, conscious of the need to seek Him so you can sit down and learn.
Warning, it's basically against human nature to do it.
Paradoxiacally we have to ask for help to even take THAT single baby step.
The reward however...
Ahhhh...the reward is...
is...
unendingly glorious.
(BTW, scifiguy above, please brother, do less sci and more life experience, forgive my cheekiness, I mean no malice"
