You are breaking. You miscue, and the cueball dribbles up to about the center spot.

Your opponent picks up the cueball, places it 1/2 inch from the 1 ball, and plays a shot that just grazes the 1 ball, hits the side rail, and buries behind the pack.

What do you do?

World Standard Rules. Many of the answers are poor, for the opponents shot is most definitely legal.

You should just hit the one-ball to avoid scratching again. There's no set rule that says what you have to do in this situation. I would graze the one-ball and leave my opponent with no shot on the one-ball without banking the ball, hoping that he/she will scratch. Then you can hit the one-ball in and break the pack at the same time, most probably leaving you with a shot on the two-ball.

That is also a foul.

Rule on the 1st shot:
- Aside from hitting the 1 ball (lowest number), the first shot, for it to be called legal, must have at least 4 balls (including the white) hitting any cushion.

So, if the opponent just grazes the one ball and puts it behind the pack, he would commit a foul since only 1 ball (cueball) touched the cushion.

Besides, if your opponent miscues on the break, why not break the balls yourself? If you know how to break, you should have a 95-99% chance of potting a ball off the break! The wing balls are the easiest to pocket into the corner pocket.

Depends on the local rules you are playing. typically four balls must hit a rail not including the cue ball before a legal break can occur. from what you said you didn't even hit the one ball. if that is the case you grab the cue ball and break again. if your opponent hit his shot inform him that was not a legal break and he must re-rack and you break again.

Play your shot off the cushion, just grazing the 1 ball and leaving the white against the top cushion. If you are good enough!

chandyman21 is the closest, but no one has quite nailed it yet.

If the breaking player fails to execute a legal break (that is, hitting the 1-ball and causing four balls to contact a rail), the balls are re-racked and the other player has the option of either breaking the balls himself or making the first player break again.

The cue ball is buried and no shot on the one ball? Then whatever you do, you are gonna scratch. Just make sure you don't open up a nine ball combo.

When you miss next he will have you on two fouls and win the game on the 3rd consecutive foul.......bust the "you know what' of the group.......scattering them and make it harder to get you on the third foul....if he is good he may still get you but at least the scattered balls will improve your chances of not being fouled out........good luck on the tour!!

The game doesn't officially begin until a legal break is executed.
