Yes, I believe they can.

Toddlers also have unnerring senses which they seem to lose as they get older. I live in Spain, and my toddler, who speaks both Spanish and English, seems to naturally know which language to communicate to each separate person in, even if he doesn't know them.

I find that he seems drawn to "beautiful people" - his teacher is very attractive, and his behaviour with her is impeccable, whereas when he was at nursery last year, he was not so well behaved and did not connect so well with his (less attactive) teacher.

I have heard that young children will look at photos of beautiful people longer than they will look at photos of less attractive people. It supposedly has to do with the fact the most beautiful faces are very symetrical and even young humans can notice that.

I think they can.

But here is the beauty, that they don't really bother by it very much. Their curiosity drive them to study each people they come across with.

When I was working with the children few years back, they didn't really care if I was fat or ugly. All they care about was what would I do next, and I entertained them with funny and hilarious behavior, which cause me to laughed with them as well.

They might be able to, but shouldnt we as parents be teaching children to look beyond someones outside appearance? I have always taught my son, who is now 4, to find something nice about someone. He has seen handicap, disabled, deformed, or disfigured and of course said something inapproiate. I immedately correct him and tell him everyone is different and that he/she is probably very nice or might color pretty pictures. We are becoming shallow as a society. Looks arent everything.
*I will get off of my soapbox now*sorry about that but had to be said.

They learn it from watching you. You should really think about whether or not you should be classifying people by their appearance in front of your children. As they get older they may start comparing themselves to other people and it could cause social disorders.

yes.. i believe that they can.
i now that at a young age.. they can tell a "bigger" person from a "smaller" person.
i was about 3... and i remember this clearly.. my mom and i were at the market and i saw a huge woman and i said.. hey look at that fat lady.. really loud.
i dont think i thought she was ugly.
but i do think that it all depends on how they see their parents acting.. and prolly what they watch on tv.

actually yes. even babies younger then that can tell if you have a symmetrical or asymmetrical face or not. "beautiful" people have a symmetrical face and babies or toddlers can tell that.
