My family and I will be vacationing in California and are wondering what some of the best attractions near the LA/Hollywood/Beverly Hills area. Also, if you know what some of the best hotels are, that would be quite helpful.

You have to see the ocean and the Hollywood sign, and really try to make a couple days' time for Disneyland, too. An okay drive is through Rodeo Drive and Hollywood, stopping by to see the handprints and the stars near Grumann's Chinese Theatre, but be prepared-it can be a little less than family friendly area! You might like to see the interesting people along Venice Beach, and the Queen Mary at Long Beach.
We enjoy staying in the Orange area-usually at the Hampton Suites. Orange is nicely accessed via the major interstates and not too far from LA, and even a quick drive down to San Diego, if you're so inclined. Have a great time!

Skip Los Angeles... come to The OC and see Disneyland and the surfers in Huntington Beach!! (laugh).

As for hotels, do not stay in the Hollywood area. That's the worse area to stay! I would go to www.tripadvisor.com and see the various Los Angeles area hotels, and then select the hotel according to your budget and the cleanliness of the selection.

If you have to stay in LA, there's Universal Studios, and you can even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking "audiences unlimited"..

If you are daring, try getting tickets for the Tonight Show or the Jimmy Kimmel show. You got to get there early but its fun and worth the time.

The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd has the famous hand prints, and if you're in town for a movie premiere, check out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.

LA has historical places to visit and ethnic places like China town and Olvera (little Mexico) Street. You can also go and see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios.

If you like Comedy you can check out one of the many comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip, check out the Hustler store, and if you are near the Flynt Publications building, sometimes you can see Larry Flynt's limo (you really can't miss the naked woman painted on the limo!).

There's some of the "must see" that I would suggest to someone visiting.

There is always the Walk of Fame, Sunset Blvd., beaches, 3rd Street Promanade in Santa Monica, Rodeo Drive, Universal Studios. There is a lot to do out there.

I'm sure that you can find decent hotels on line. It just depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Plus, you should plan on renting a car. LA does not have a great public transportation system and the traffic sucks. Be prepared for that.

Hi there! Definitely stop by Disneyland for a day or two. Visit my blog if you'd like help planning your trip: http://im-all-ears-disney-vacation-services.blogspot.com/

Also visit these great sites in the Southern California Area:

Knotts Berry Farm (great coasters and shows, minutes from Disneyland)
La Brea Tar Pitts (home of the dinosaurs)
The San Diego Zoo (one of the most famous zoos in the nation)
Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA
Huntington Library in San Gabriel, CA (home of the famous painting, "Blue Boy" and the most spectacular garden you've ever seen)
Griffin Park in Hollywood, CA (one of the best planetariums I've ever visited--lots of movies shot here)
Rodeo Drive in Beverley Hills (fun to take a stroll down and window shop, or really shop if you're up for it!)
The Gene Autry Museum near Pasadena, CA
Universal Studios in Burbank, CA
Newport Beach and Balboa Island (home of the TV series The OC and the nation's top spot for frozen chocolate covered bananas!)

I would not recommend Magic Mountain. They have horrible customer serivice, line can run 6 hours long on a busy day and the park is not kept clean. Two thumbs down-way down from me.

Enjoy your vacation! Let me know if you'd like more tips and help!

Of course, you need to do the whole "Walk of The Stars" deal, complete with the Mann Chinese Theater. Heres a couple of insider tips to help you see the best of my town.... right off Hollywood Boulevard (head down Fountain or something) you will get to Santa Monica Boulevard (be careful theres two, ones the "big" one & theres a smaller one), make sure to drive up & down this street but be warned this is the "weirdo" street. Melrose street is the place to get the latest & greatest "in" stuff for you fashion people and you will get to see some really cool LA denizens as well (stop at Johnny Rockets for a burger, 60's style and step back in time !) one place I recommend on Melrose is "Industrial Wasteland" this is a clothing store and way cool.
In Beverly Hills, check out the greatest exotic cars on Wilshire Blvd. cross street La Cienaga. Keep going west on Wilshire (point to remember...Wilshire Blvd. runs the whole length of LA from Downtown to Santa Monica) ask somebody where the hotel is that the movie "Pretty Woman" was shot at (its pink and if you're going towards the sea on Wilshire will be on your left hand side). In the Hollywood hills make sure you don't miss going to the bar/eatery Yamashiro, this is an authentic Japanese castle that was brought to LA in pieces and rebuilt, piece by piece, on top of this hill, great views of all three cities from up here !
Did you know we have a casino ???? Yes !!! we do !! Los Alamitos ! its in Inglewood and since its the only one, its easy to find !! For you older kids and swinging adults, the Sunset Strip is the place to visit, the coolest bars, pubs, dives reside here (just remember.....last call is 2:00am and if you park without reading the signs....your car will be towed away !)
We also have the Griffith Park Observatory which is a great place and right next to it Griffith Park for you green freaks.
Remember to visit PINKS on Sunset for the absolutely BEST hot dogs and grilled onions, the Pacific Coast Highway for absolutely breathtaking scenery, Olivera Street for a taste of Mexico (I would recommend you leave Downtown before dark...thats when the night trippers come out !!), Chinatown (Yes ! we have one) for a taste of China, Artesia Boulevard for a taste of India (unofficially known as Little India), 3rd Street in Santa Monica for some LA culture, eat at Kings Taco for the most authentic Mexican burrito LA style ! and lastly ENJOY YOURSELF !!!....in SoCal we have a saying, PERFECT PEOPLE, PERFECT WEATHER, PERFECT PLACE !!!!
