Get him a friend. That way they will terrorize each other rather than your furniture, or you.
All cats are different. Some start becoming more mature around 5-6 months, and others might be 16 and still playing like a kitten. I have a 10 month old who has the nick-name "Nutty-Noodle". You can probably imagine why. Her real name is Xenia (Zen-eye-ah), by the way.

Play with him as much as possible. Not only will you wear him out, but it will create an incredible bond between the two of you. What I would do when mine was little was sit in the kitchen with a few small rubber balls (the kind you can get from a machine for a quarter) and bounce them against the wall. If you throw it close to the base of the wall, it will bounce up, hit the wall and fly back over your cats head. Mine loved to jump and try to catch it. Usually after about half an hour or so, he will be worn out and just want to rest. My cats almost two now, and he has calmed down a lot. It just takes a while.

I have the exact same problem with my cat. It takes probably a year or so for them to grow out of that. Till then teach it not to do things that you don't want it to do. Like every time it does something you don't want it to do, give it little taps on the butt, but not too hard just like a little hard and a little soft tap.

it took my russian blue baby cat Zowie, about four to six months to calm down a little, then up to a year to live up to the mellow cat persona
