and I moved recently into another house with a roomie that has a dog. He is spraying everywhere. I have an appointment to get him fixed, but am concerned the spraying will continue. He is 18 months old. Any thoughts on how to 1) get him to stop spraying and 2) get along with the dog in the house?

I am glad that you decided to get your male cat fixed. Until you do he is going to keep spraying because he is letting the dog know who is in charge. Other causes of spraying could be a urinary tract infection. An age old remedy is to spray the area that he is spraying with vinegar. Vinegar will naturally kill the scent. The cat will continue to spray until he is fixed. You may also think about behavior classes because this can now be a habit for your cat and may be hard to break. For part 2 of your question, depending on the temperament of both the cat and the dog, I wouldn't leave them alone. When they are together and they aren't getting along, correct the animals behavior. I have a water spray bottle and a firm voice and that usually does the trick.
Good luck!

Unfortunatly getting him to stop spraying may be difficult. Some cats take a liking to it and never break the habit. I worked at a veterinarian for a year and had to euthanize 4 different cats for this problem. Sorry to bear bad news, but the good news is all cats are different, and yours may be teachable. First get Urine-off (on the internet) to completely remove all previous stains. You will need to watch the cat and yell no when you see him start to spray. Be consistent and patient. As for the dog, give it time, cats will adjust.
