I so agree with you! I think that if a athlete gets a scholarship he is required to fulfill all four years to the college that he receives the scholarship from, not bail out after a year or two. If they want to quit school, that is fine, but they should not be allowed to play in the professional arena of their given sport until the year in which their college career would have ended, so they are really committing to fours years to that school whether they play or not. Scholarships are so hard to come by, and they throw it way to play in the pros cause of a big payday, they aren't thinking of the life after sports(or during either) Some wont have the money any longer than it takes to cash the check, and when the "games" are over they will be right back where they started from, no education-no future.
I'm impressed by colleges who have a better then average graduation rate among athletes such as Duke and Stanford-those student/athletes are really smart getting a degree from a great university and still have a chance to play in the pros. Even if they don't attend such a big named university, a degree from any college is better then being a drop out.

Even if he makes the Pros, it's not something that he can do for the rest of his life.
A professional career is short-lived, and without any guarantees. That's the reality.
Having a degree to fall back on may be the "safer" road, but it will not make him rich.
He's a stand-out athlete? Does he want to be rich (possibly famous too?). Well, not every person can achieve what he's achiechieved so far. That means he has qualities that most people don't have.....The best advise is for him to develop entrepaneurial skills and focus them to start his own sports-related BUSINESS.
This is America, there's more than one way to make millions of dollars. You certainly don't need to make the Pros to be rich!
He HAS special skills. Now mix in a little brain power and desire, then start a business, and he'll be set for life!

Only about 2500 people in America can make a living in professional sports. There are millions of doctors and lawyers and business professionals. Then what do you do when you get injured and can't play anymore? Or just get too old? Golf is the only sport I know where old people can still make a living professionally.

What happens when you bank everything on sports and there's nothing there? What will you fall back on?
Get that education to help when the career ends. Get that education when the career doesn't even start.
