My sister and i have volunteered to help out at our local library doing the summer reading program, where we go in and read to the young kids. We need some craft ideas, other than coloring pages for them to do. Our theme is on the Farm. One day we're gonna show them how to make butter using heavy cream. Any ideas or links to websites would be greatly appreaciated.

definitely plant some kind of veggie. i think turnips grow quickly (double check that) and easily (put soil in plastic cup with seed and watch it grow! - the kids love watering and caring for their plants!) also great craft projects can be made by using things associated with the farm... let them do free art with glue and corn kernals or seeds. Have a veggie/fruit party (each kid brings in their favortie fresh snack) and eat healthy (more kids will like this than you think!!) Potato stamping is always fun (cut potato in half and cut out shapes into the potato. Let kids dip in paint and stamp away!) You can paint/decorate gourds. Animals are always a big hit... Cut out pics of farm animals and let the kids collage their favorite farm animals. You could hard-boil eggs and let the kids color or dye them, then take them outside and hide & gather them. For farm vehicles, you could collect some small hot-wheels tractors, trucks, and other farm machinery and let the kids paint abstract art by driving the vehicles through paint or ink or foam or whatever and make cool wheels prints on paper. Making hats is usually something kids like... find a pattern for a cowboy hat and let the kids glue straw/seeds/hay/grass/whatever to it. Have fun!

My kids like to make a "look and find". Even my two year old likes them. He finds more things then I do. Here is what you need:

1) A Jar or see through container with a lid
2) Rice or bird food ( if you use rice you can dye it ahead of time
with food coloring.
3) Thing that are on a farm ( that can fit in the jar) Example: a
piece of hay, small bell, animal cut outs (you can get them at
craft stores)......
4) a penny
5) Because it's a farm theme you can use a piece of material that
looks like a bandanna to use for decoration between the jar and
the lid.

All you do is put all these things in a jar and close it. People have been known to spend hours trying to find everything that is in the jar. I made one for the Fourth Of July. I even put an extra bonus in them for the people who can find everything. On a 3 different grains of rice (that I didn't die) I wrote red, white, and blue. That drove people nuts. Probably not a good idea for preschoolers though.
If you need more of an explanation or want me to send you a picture of one so you can get a better idea, free free to e-mail me at Angel_Eyes1313@yahoo.com.

If you don't mind them using glue: cut out hearts in different colors (same sizes) out of construction paper before you get there. Give each kid a green piece of paper and several hearts. 4 hearts glued with the tips together make a flower. You can use either precut circles or pompons for the center. Then the kids can color bugs if they like. It makes a beautiful meadow.

Check out familyfun.go.com - they ALWAYS have great ideas.
Some other ideas include - masks - easy to find, have the kids cut out, and tie string to the corners. Sheep - find an outline, have the kids glue on cotton balls. If you want something fun and messy, have them plant seeds - beans grow easily. They could also sort seeds in egg cartons by whatever category you or they choose (math skills).

Some home made ice cream will go over great with the kids, and they can help make it, then make it at home with the recipe.

You could try crayola.com.
Also http://www.perpetualpreschool.com. They have lots of themed sections and on is "Farmer's Market". It has snack ideas, craft ideas, songs, etc.
www.preschoolbystormie.com is also another good resource.

Basket weaving is a fun craft idea, though a little complicated at first.
