The definition of gay is:
1 a : happily excited : MERRY b : keenly alive and exuberant : having or inducing high spirits
2 a : BRIGHT, LIVELY b : brilliant in color
3 : given to social pleasures; also : LICENTIOUS

All of these are stereotypes of homosexuals. My question is: Why does the homosexual community define themselves as gay? And does this hurt the homosexual community?

Who decided "gay" was good? Why not ******? The definition of ****** is: 1. A bundle of twigs, sticks, or branches bound together.
2. A bundle of pieces of iron or steel to be welded or hammered into bars.

The term "******" comes from the stereotype that homosexuals are skinny and feminine, like a bundle of twigs.

How is this any worse than "gay”?

Why not fairy?

I would really like some constructive feedback from both homosexuals and heterosexuals (not straights because that implies that homosexuals are crooked).

Do the labels we give ourselves affect how people perceive us?

And is Homosexual better

I'm not looking for if you think homosexuals is a sin, I'm asking does the label "gay" make people stereotype homosexuals more.

Please read the whole question

The definition of gay that you listed is purely academic and has nothing to with homosexuality. It was used pre-homosexual takeover to mean happy, lively, and all the other adjectives listed in the definition. However, when the homosexual mafia starting more agressively promoting their agenda, they sort of adopted the word. This is a common process that happens with words as their connotations and denotations change over time.

Yes, labels do affect how people perceive others. Tell someone that you're a Republican, a liberal, an American, a lawyer, a Catholic, an atheist, a vegetarian, et. al., they automatically have an internal reaction to that label. They perceive certain qualities or beliefs associated with these labels. For example, an absurdly large amount of people upon finding out that someone is from Texas, will make some disparaging comment about President Bush. This of course is bassed upon a baseless belief that simply because someone is from the same state as someone else, that they are automatically associated with them. You could take this Bush-Texas example and extend it to Jesse Ventura-Minnesota, John Kerry-Massachusetts, the list is interminable. Also, I might add that the proper, academic term, as offensive as it sounds is queer.

I don't know why the word "Gay" per se. But I think that the problems are much more political than that, no matter what you call homosexual men and lesbian women.

The reason the bundle of sticks tied together was used to describe people suspected of being gay is because in the Middle Ages, anyone suspected of being gay was burned to death by that method. Therefore the use of the word. I think that is terribly cruel and I think it would be insensitive to use that word for gay people as much as if you used it for Jews because Hitler did that. Or calling Shiites that because that is what Sunni's did to them. That's just plain cruel.

I do not know the reason why the world gay is preferable. It isn't preferable to me that there is a distinction made between any one person or group against another group.l am sure that the labels are a means to classify and scapegoat people. That is why it isn't a good idea to do that. I think all the cruel and insensitive things we do to each other affects how we perceive each other and how we perceive ourselves. That is why there is so much depression, hostility and anger in the world.

I don't think Homosexual is better. I just call them people.

Thats clever but any word that defined gay people would have implications to some people that are less then wholesome. The whole problem with the average adult in the U.S, that is heterosexual and it seems to be getting worse not better, is that they seem incapable of seeing homosexuality as anything healthy. I have seem many healthy homosexual relationships, and many (like most of mine) unhealthy heterosexual relationships. They just cant get it through there thick heads that there is nothing wrong with love between two consenting adults even if the same sex. The tuff guy bullshit that the kids all are about are just little clones with little clone idead that dont extend to any but the ideas that are given them, God help them and us all. I mean are society is dying from federally funded gangsters, and by the mafia being in every branch of the government and arent they an open minded intellectual bunch, not. Its all horrible and until we get this period of bullshit thuggery over and done with the stupidest of machoism is going to keep surfacing. The more I think on it, the more I am really beginning to hate the mafia and there effect on everything. Its not healthy for gays, straights or other living things. So no the label gay is not affecting how people percieve you , its the stupidity of the people who are the priveledged damned of our country who are hurting you and everyone else. God damn the mafia I want you out of my country, go back to siciily you unamerican punks.

first of all by your "****" i am sure you mean the word "fag." First of all, much like other derogatory words, the word fag has a violent origin. Yes, you are quite right in saying that the definition of "Fag" comes from a bundle of twigs tied together. The reason that this word is associated with homosexuality however is not because of the skinny or feminine stereotype but with the witch trials that took place in Europe hundreds of years ago. Fags [meaning the bundle of sticks in this context] are used as kindling to start fires. Well, before the witchs were burned at the stake they would burn homosexuals to "kindle the flames." This is the origin of the word fag and why i as a homosexual find it offensive. First of all, if you are going to refer to someone as "gay" i would say the most appropriate term would be homosexual however i doubt anyone would find offense to the term "gay." Honestly though, if i were to say what i really think, i would tell you that you shouldn't have to label anyone by there sexual orientation as it is. I don't walk around saying to my friends "Dude, look at that hetero," or "Hey, you got to meet my straight friend."

like all words, there ar etwo meanings. the connotation and the denotation. the denotation is the dictionary definition, which you're already outlined. the connotation is an idea or meaning suggested by or associated with a word. like gay. it used to mean happy, but now it's a term for homosexuals. but calling someone a fa**** is worse than calling them gay even though their connotation is similar, the words sound different in terms of harshness. it's better to say that someone is overweight than fat, they mean pretty much the same thing, but one sounds nicer than the other.

most of the time people don't label themselves, but others label them instead. labeling can help a person feel connected to a certain group of people, or it can be used to exclude a person and make someone else feel above them in social standing. most gay people i know are fine calling theselves gay. it's the label they were given and they're fine with it.

You do with your life whatever you want. If you're homosexual, that's fine. You're religion is entirely up to you, if you see yourself as heaven-bound and 'gay', then so be it. How do you know that if there are divine punishments against gays? Yes, there may be verses in the Bible against homosexuality, however most free-thinking Christians believe that it's you're religious beliefs, not your mortal beliefs, that determine where you go in the next life. I belong to a study group of very intelligent and open-minded people at my church, NO ONE there believes that if you're gay, you go to hell. Now, if you're an absolutely **** bag on Earth and you don't believe in God, that's a one-way ticket to hell in the eyes of every Christian, and almost every religious person on Earth.

Homosexuality is a sin against God.

Read Romans 1:18 through 31. It tells of all sins...and names them. It ends by saying,
"who knowing the righteous judgment of God, practice such things are deserving of death, not only those that do them, but also those that approve of those that practice them".

Why is sexual orientation so important? If you're thinking "procreation" then sex for any other purpose is wrong, no matter what the orientation.

Being a homosapien, I do wish the word “gay” could return to it’s original meaning…

It's wrong. God created Adam and Eve (Man and Woman) and made our anatomy accordingly. It was never intended to be Adam and Steve. That orifice is an exit -- not an entry port if you know what I mean.
