because that's what the holy spirit does
he's a comforter to us on earth. helps us get through the pain and through the problems.
And he's JESUS he can do what he want in my book, cuz he has the power to do it.

It's not a name so much as a function or role.
The entire discussion about the Comforter starts in John 14, and notice this verse...
(John 14:16 KJV) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
This clearly shows that the person/entity whom Jesus is speaking about is *another* Comforter...which implies there already was one...and that was Jesus.
So, it is more a role, function, action of the Holy Spirit as opposed to a name. And most of the time, the word "the" is in front of "Comforter." Therefore, it is not a name, as that would be like my wife saying to a friend, "I will send *the* Lawrence to get that loaf of bread." You just don't talk that way. But, if she said, "I will send *the* delivery boy to pick up the loaf of bread," now that is common speech.

Why would God call Himself many different things in the OT? It's because He IS those things, just as the Holy Spirit is comforting among many other things (such as Holy :P).

He call the Holy Spirit the comforter because that what it was. It is a comfort to know that the Holy Spirit has seal us until the day of redemption Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. It is also called the Holy Ghost when it referes to the Person of the Spirit. Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Acts 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Jesus said, "My peace I leave you." Thus, the Holy Spirit is "peaceful" ... and peace my friend, is COMFORT! Therfore, the Holy Spirit would also be known as a "Comforter."

The Comforter will comfort Christians in the absence of Christ. This is one reason we need to be comforted! Also, He is God, so His indwelling is quite comforting enough!

Because having the Holy Spirit within you is comforting. I could explain why that is, but you didn't ask.
This I believe; http://homelessheart.com/testimony.htm
