Hello ...one way is to surround the dog dish with water, because ants do not swim.
The second and Recommended solution is feed your dog once a day, this means that you control any treats the dog gets during the day. I know this works and the feeding time is more exciting and meaningful between you and your dog.
Whatever food the dog does not finish at the one feeding time each day, you pick up the dog dish and take away. And be strong do not feed again until tomorrow.
It is easiest and best to train from puppy hood, but once you achieve this feeding method you will be happy to have out foxed the ants, (because the dog will be hungry and finish in less than 5 minutes) and amazed at the improvement in the dogs health.
PS ...an excellent time for a little dog training is when he/she is hungry.
Have Fun and good luck

Go to a local feed store and puchase a large rubber pan suitable for feeding horses. Place several bricks in the bottom center of the pan. Fill pan with water till it covers the bricks slightly. Place
dog food bowl on bricks. Ants cannot cross the water. There are pans that are designed like this, but they may be difficult to find and expensive. This is a home made solution that works.

You are feeding your dog too much food. Try putting less food in his or her dish to where they will finish thier food. Alot of the times your pet gets sick when they eat food that has been sitting there for a while flys, ants and all kinds of insects are the reasons.

Do not leave the food out all the time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feed the dog twice a day and then pick up and wash the dish. It doesn't sound as if you interact with the dog much. Feeding twice a day will allow you at least two times daily to see the dog and observe for problems. I feel better SEEING my dogs eat. Food left out all day is a breeding ground for bacteria. If the dog eats a little, salive gets on the food and starts breaking it down. Add a little sunlight and PRESTO, you have bacterial growth. Yes even with dry food!!!!!!!

The water idea is great and leaving out less food is a good idea too. Here is why you should leave out only what the dog consumes in a little while. You will have a problem with raccoons. Raccoons bring more raccoons and rabies. Possums, slugs, blue jays, mice and rats and feral cats are also eating the extra dog food.
