Typically speaking, the maxillary (or upper) molars have 3 roots (with canals) and the mandibular (or lower) molars have 2 roots (with canals). As for the wisdom teeth (3rd molars), whether they are upper or lower molars, it is impossible to say what is 'typical' since there are so many variations. However, roots of 3rd molars are often fused together.

some have three and some have four. my dentist told me when i looked at my xray and asked him why do all my roots look different on my molars.
