Hello all,

I noticed this evening that my breasts are leaking what appears to be thin, whitish/clear milk. I have two children (the youngest one is a year old and I didn't breast feed him, so my milk has been dried up for a while). I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant because I have an I.U.D. and my period just ended about two weeks ago. It's possible I could be ovulating.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? Is it normal to leak breast milk/fluid for no reason? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I'm just wondering if possible ovulation could bring this one. This is a first for me. No other problems/symptoms so to speak of. Thanks!

Hon, that's normal. Either you're near your period, and it's just hormonal, or they are being over stimulated. As long as you get your breasts checked yearly, and there are no 'lumps' or extreme soreness. I wouldn't worry about it. If you DIDN'T have children, I might be more concerned. Your mammary glands are mature, and they will want to do what mature breasts do, lactate.

Nikki is obviously young. When I was much younger the same thing used to happen to me. I saw my ob/gyn and this is what she told me at the time. *s*

Women who aren't very informed about breast cancer tend to jump to conclusions. (my niece had breast cancer, but survived.) Honey it's more likely nothing abnormal.

Perfectly normal. I have a three 1/2 year old son and a 13 month old son. I have leaked for 3 1/2 years on and off. It's fine. Don't worry!

Its normal i have an IUD in and i also have some leaking from my breast especially around the time of my period. I think its because of the hormone that the IUD relases. My daughter is 9 months old and i didnt breastfeed her but i have had the leakage since i have had the IUD i would think about it too much unless it really bothers you. If it does go see your dr for some piece of mind but i think it is normal.

During ovulation cycle, the mammary glands in your breast secrete milk, which leads to the opening at the nipple. Mammary glands are present in both male and female, but it only function for women. Mammary glands are not part of the reproductive system, hence you dont need to be pregnant or anything to secrete milk. High level of estrogen trigger the mammary glands to secrete milk. During menstrual cycle, your body's estrogen level increases highly. Once the corpus lutiem disintegrates, estrogen level will deplete and everything will be back to normal.

You may have an overabundance of pitocin, which is something a doctor can check. I'm not sure that this is cause for concern, however, it may help you understand why your breasts are producing.

Even men can lactate with enough pitocin and stimulation, as can adoptive moms.
