Absolutely they do. They can take cues from pictures or music meant to evoke fear, plus, he can sense your reaction to the piece.

Rosi and Rachel are right. Children naturally know some of the things they should be cautious of...strangers, the dark, etc. Some things they learn...after hearing that the stove is HOT, they will learn not to touch it. My daughter now knows that she should not touch the stove, b/c we tell her it is hot and it can hurt her.

Children can hear the difference between a 'scary' sound and a 'happy' one, just like if you tell your son "no" in different tones. If you say no in an under tone, he will know you mean business. If you say no in a sweet way, laughing as you say it, he will think you are joking.

My daughter, 21 months, definitely knows the difference between scary sounds and happy ones. It's just a natural instinct, the same way it comes natural to you to hold him when he becomes scared.

Because they are liitle human beings. My friends kids started nightmares at this age. They are very aware of things going on around them. Don't underestimate them because they are babies. They can pick up on your feelings too

Instinct! It's a survival thing - and about the only survival thing a human infant can do is cry.
