Times Square, named after the one-time headquarters of The New York Times, is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan, New York City, which centers on 42nd Street and Broadway. It is not a real square like Red Square or Tiananmen Square but rather an intersection. It consists of the blocks between 6th and 9th Avenues from east to west and 39th and 52nd Streets from south to north (40.75659° N 73.98626° W). It makes up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.

Those nine words appeared on Page 2 of The New York Times on April 9, 1904, the morning after Mayor George B. McClellan signed the resolution changing the name of Long Acre Square. Beneath the headline was a map with "Times Square" in large letters and the new landmarks of what had been a horse-and-buggy neighborhood - Long Acre Square had been named after London's carriage district.
