My parents have always said that my border collie, rex, had a problem with hair. He's more of an inside dog because he will jump the fence if we let him outside for longer than 30 minutes alone. I suggested shaving him so he doesn't shed as much. Is this a good idea?

I suggest a kind of compromise answer to this problem. Downright shaving might be too severe, and a lot of hair is a problem too. Go to an experienced groomer and have him clipped to about 1 inch hair lenght. He will still have protection from the elements, and will have less hair to boot

NO, do not shave your border collie!!!
Get a brush called a rake. It is to be used in tandem with a "regular" dog brush. The rake is for the undercoat. You will be amazed how much more hair you get off.
This is the time of year that dogs "blow their coat" getting rid of winter coat. Also make sure you are feeding a premium dog food (Eagle, Solid Gold, Innova are all good ones). This makes a huge difference in how much hair they loose.
A good bath works wonders too.
Please DO NOT shave your dog.

NO! The long hair & under coat protects the skin from getting a sun burn. If you want just brush your dog with a slicker brushes, then brush Rex maybe once a week

When you brush Rex go upward, after that then brush back so the hair goes down..

Warning! Be sure to do it outside :o) You will get hair everywhere

I know that if you shave certain kinds of dogs that aren't hypoallergenic, like akita's, their hair will grow back very course if you shave them. Boy do they shed. I have to brush them all the time instead. Shaving sounds nice, but course hair doesn't sound that great to me. But I am not sure about your breed, you should ask a groomer.

No. But always ask your vet, I asked the same question when I had a dog that shed. When she past away, I bought Shih Tzus.
The hair protects Rex,

It really doesn't bother them to get shaved or not.
We used to shave down the collies in the summer in Georgia due to the heat.
Either way.....shaved or hairy....he still requires brushing.

No.Coated dogs have a coat for a reason. If you want a short coated dog, get one. He will not shed much less, just shorter hair.

no...buy a brush and brush him every day for about 10-15 mins...also..if he is an outside dog...why is shedding a problem?

Try waxing instead of shaving.
