This verse was meant to be an example of the usefulness of tolerence - to not be quick to judge or fight - yet so many misconstrue it to mean that Christians should not show anger or fight - which is not true - Christ himself showed anger when he cleared the temple of the money changers who had turned the place of worship into a place of business - many good men of God have gone into battle at His command - I believe what this verse intends is that we as Christians set an example for peace and choose our battles - it does not mean we are cowards and do not take a stand - as the story goes "the Bible only says once!"

It says in the new testament that if a person strikes you should turn the other cheek and let them strike the other cheek. But how many of you honestly abide by that.
this is just the beginning, Jesus taught so much more about how Christians are to behave. the sad thing is we all miss it time to time. the great thing is we don't have to be perfect in works. but humble, sincere, and continue to strive towards the goal.
the world's way is much worse; how many times has someone cut you off or run a stop sign to get in front of you only to be stopped at the same traffic light. how many kids get shot over a pair of shoes. when i lived in NYC you could get killed for scuffing some ones sneakers on the crowded subway.
God teaches Love & Mercy are the best ways to live.

Yes it is in the bible and yes I believe I do follow it. Because what I see here is this if a person offends you, you are not to take action and offend them..."do not repay evil for evil"...I also believe that we have the right to protect ourselves if we are being jumped, what person would not defend him/herself? So here in a sense IF I KNEW the person who struck my cheek ,no I would not strike them back, BUT If I was being attacked (like raped, or jumped) YES I Would defend myself the best I knew how. Hope you understand what I'm saying

Of course it also says something about an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot...but I'm sure that some Christian will pleasantly point out that this absolutely does NOT constitute a contradiction in the bible, because the bible, of course, doesn't contradict itself...go figure...

Actually we get slapped quite a bit right here on Yahoo Answers and we keep turning the other cheek so you can just slap us again. We will continue to do so because that is what Christ taught.

I have. I did not strike back. I did my best to avoid the next cheap shot. Went and got stitched. Bled quite a bit. Who are you trying to judge?

I do. Its pretty tough. Although the last time somebody physically hit me I was a child. As an adult if people are rude or mean to me I ignore it and I treat them as if they were not.

Count me as one who has turned the other cheek.
Not only from physical attack but from verbal abuse, discrimination, religious persecution, etc. You name it. No one has killed me yet.
Now who else is going to turn their other cheek besides Christians?
Shucks! Who else taught this besides Jesus?

This is only when you are proselytizing.
I use to think that way also. But a deeper study sheds light.
If some hits you for any other reason, deck them.

This is the ultimate test for the spiritual person. Sacrificing your body and comfort so that someone else can work out their problems. Sound familiar?
