First of all a cruise can be a great romantic get away. We go on them all the time and you can have a bunch of privacy on ship and a great time. The cruise lines will keep you busy all day and evening. Plus you get great meals and on a 7 day cruise you will have 2 formal nights when you can wear a great dress and he can wear a tux.
I suggest a caribbean cruise. But timing can be a problem since October is the end of the hurricane season. If you want a nice beach location with great hotels and things to do I recommend Cancun, Mexico. Its a great place with great hotels and restaurants and it easy to get around there because all of the things for tourists are located in one place along a road called the "Hotel District".
My third suggestion is Las Vegas. Vegas has some of THE best hotel in the country, all of the great shows to go see, night clubs and plenty of night life and its a 24/7 town. If you want to have a great experiece at the pool, stay at the Mandalay Bay hotel which has a sand beach wave pool and a lazy river for tubing. There are also other hotels with fabulous pool areas. Then Vegas has a whole bunch of free stuff to keep you occupied when you are not at the pool or gambling. If you go to Vegas be sure to tell them when you check in that its a honeymoon and they generally do some thing special for you.

I am a Marine and in a similar predicament.
I don't suggest a cruise as they can more more expensive then a flight to the carribean/hotel/food/flight.
If you truly want to go anywhere fantastic I recommend Australia for the high end route.
If you want a great soft and soothing time try the bahamas. Do some research though because if you pick the wrong island you might not like the way it looks when you get there.
While you are gone get a couples massage, hang out in the warm evening air no music just ambiance.....unless you are in NY then be loud and proud....
Try Orbitz or Tavelocity, for some all inclusive plans. You can even get a cheaper car rental.

I would go with an all-inclusive resort where you don't have to worry about anything but eating, drinking and relaxing (tips are usually included in your price). Try for a package deal because you'll save money if you get hotel + airfare instead of purchasing them separate.
Negril, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic are both great places to stay.
Try www.bestgetawaysonline.com for more vacation ideas. If you choose to cruise, they've got that information also.
Be blessed and Good Luck!

Vegas and Cancun are fun but dont think of them as romantic.
If you live on the East Coast, Try the Mayan Riviera 20-60 miles South of Cancun, tons of great place to stay on private secluded beaches. There are tons of info and websites just google Mayan Riviera.
If you live on the West coast go to Puerto Vallarta, and stay South of downtown, again tons of web sites. My Favorite place there is
http://www.casamirador.net/Accommodations-Puerto-Vallarta-Casa-Mirador.htm
Check out the individual unit on the private beach Vista del Los Arcos.
