My miniature pomerian sometime coughs like she has a fur ball in her throat. She does not throw up. She is 14 years old. When it happens it sounds like she is trying to catch her breath. Is this normal and if not what can I do to help her.

Mine is 10 years old and often does this cough thing. My best guess is that she is like a little vacuum sweeper: She goes around snurfing the carpet for dropped crumbs or whatever. I have cats, and my own hair is long, so lord knows what all is on the carpet. Many times, in fact, she will come to me with a weird look on her face and I pull hair or lint or something out of her mouth for her, something that gets stuck and she can't swallow. Could your Pom be snuffing up hairs or something?

Older dogs often cough because they have an enlarged heart. You really need to see a vet and get a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Sometimes coughing can be a sign of serious heart problems.
Take your dog to the vet to get her heart checked immediatley.
