You are talking to the right person:
I have had insomnia on and off for the past 4 years. However, I don't have the normal kind. I can get to sleep, but I wake up around 3am and can't get back to sleep.
What usually helps me is to be honest with myself and admit that something is bothering me. Another thing I do is to reduce the caffeine intact after 12noon.
I also try not to spend too much time "trying" to go back to bed. Sometimes I get up and watch tv until I am sleepy and try to go back again. Another technique I try is to purposely focus on happy thoughts and eventually I fall asleep.
If you think the insomnia is health related, you might want to consult a doctor. I know there is a sleep clinic in the SF Bay area. If you don't live close by, there has got to be another near you. Good luck and keep trying!

It's because of the working world. There is so much stress from everybody trying to make the almighty dollar. Unfortunately, it sounds like this stress is getting to your husband? I think that's why there are so many prescriptions filled for sleeping aids across North America. It's hurting your children and having an impact on the entire family it sounds like. Have you considered asking your husband to switch careers? Will this allow you to keep the same luxuries if he takes a less paying job? You're right your sons need someone to teach them to play baseball and take them to ballgames and stuff and this might be bothering them. Have you ever tried warm milk? I heard this works. However it won't help with nerves and stresses throughout the day. Also, a new mattress might help too. I don't have any children because I worry for their future. I know that in order to even own a home, I would have to work very long hours - and probably have to commute for an hour. Hope this helps... Chin up.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Yes.

Log on.

Ask Yahoo questions.

When you're done, go to games.atari.com and play a couple of games of online Scrabble.

Meanwhile, have yourself a cuppa Tension Tamer tea.

That should cure your insomnia.

Above and beyond the obvious: removing caffeine, alcohol, etc, try Valerian root - it is what Valium was named after, but does not share the latter's profoundly addictive qualities. It is a true tranquilizer - renders the mind tranquil - and has other useful properties like being antispasmodic, and generally uplifting. The Physician's Desk Reference for Herbal Supplements describes a clinical that concluded that 70% of those who tried it experienced either "good" or "very good" sleep. Its affordable, safe, and much better than drugs.

Pick a time to go to bed, and go to bed at that same time every night. And get up at the same time,e very morning. Also silence the barking dog, keep the cat on your bed when you're asleep and maybe take a nap, once and awhile. But naps aren't usually necessary, if you stick to your sleeping schedule. Now if the lack of sleep is due to very terrorizing dreams and night mares, try taking sominex with some water, before bed.

I have no problem sleeping. I chase my kids around all day, house upkeep, and 40 minutes on the treadmill 4 or 5 times a week. Before bedtime take a warm shower and a half glass of red wine...Sleepytime!!

It is a good idea to find out what is causing the lack of sleep. If you have trouble sleeping you can take nutritional supplements found at your local health food store. Melatonin is good for productin seratonin. Chamomile is good for calming and helping put to sleep. Look for formulas that have Valerian, skullcap and lemon balm. These supplements have all been shown to aid in sleep. There are alternatives to prescription medication. Good luck.

Read something boring at bedtime, even in bed if you can. I have fallen asleep involuntarily over books most of my life, and do it on purpose when I'm getting too wired from lack of sleep.
