I am looking for attractions that are not far away from the interstate that I can stop and take a look at. Family friendly historical sites are preferred. Any suggestions? We leave on 6/13/06

Well, there are lots of attractions that are relatively easy to get to from the interstate. Six Flags over GA is about 20 miles from downtown ATL....its an amusement park. Fernbank museum is downtown, the Varsity (famous for its chili dogs and greasy onion rings) is an ATL favorite....you must have lunch there. The Atlanta center for puppetry arts is downtown and for a small price, the family can enjoy a play and then the kids make their own marionette to take home. The Atlanta Zoo is another attraction. There is also a water park called White Water. Turner field is downtown, and you can see it from the interstate. All these things are easy to get to from the interstate. Have fun!

Also, the cyclorama is next door to the zoo....its great for history buffs. You sit in seats and the battle of the Civil War is relived through a wonderful display that comes to life almost.

Forgot one more....the King Center is also downtown. Explore the life and legacy of Dr. MLK jr.

Just to add to the others....The Georgia Aquarium definately. Its downtown and not far off of I-75/85. Its brand new and very popular. Great place for the kids to go too. You need to make reservations though, they only let a certain amount of people in at a time and people are discouraged from just showing up. You can stand in line for hours and never get in. Its right next to Centennial Olympic Park too.

Stone Mountain is not far off I-285, very historical and family friendly. Come in the afternoon and stay for the Lazer Show.

By all means avoid the" trinity" of the "new " jail, greyhound bus station and Magic City.... just kidding.

I think kane pretty much told you everything. even our liquor stores are historic in Atlanta.
