it doesn't matter whether peter went to rome or not. Jesus told peter that he would be the rock that the church would be built upon. peter then became the leader of the church (which was started before his death;some say the moment that Christ told peter this, others say at pentecost). according to the roman catholic church and the easter orthodox church, peter is the first pope.
this argument has been going on for a long time and has to do more with "apostolic succession" which holds that the church is the direct spiritual successor of the beliefs of the apostles. even more, the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian, Old Catholic, and some Independent Catholic Churches would say that apostolic succession is maintained through the consecration of their bishops in unbroken personal succession back to the apostles. The problem arises when the great schism occured (when the Church split into the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church each saying that they are the true "One Holy and Apostolic Church). Each church claimed/claims that their leaders were the true direct spiritual descendant of Peter(wish i could go into detail but time doesn't permit).

Peter was the first pope. The church considers him to be so sacred that no pope after Pete ever chose the name for himself. There has never been a Peter ll .

None of the Apostles had anything to do with the catholic church. The catholic church wasn't invented yet, and the connection that they claim to Peter is a lie.
This I believe; http://homelessheart.com/testimony.htm

the Catholics claim that Jesus called the Apostle Peter to be the first pope but if you study the travels of Peter, he was never in Rome.

Jesus told Peter that he would be the rock that Jesus would form His church upon.
So the Pope is sort of the spiritual representation of Peter.

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
With love in Christ.
