One caution with greys & whippets - the adults do make nice sedate pets - but that's because they already did everything possible by the time they are 14 months old. Translation: they are high energy "puppies from He**" Also even as adults - they have definate counter cruser tendencies - to the point of a few genuses leaning to open the fridge. Also if you go for a greyhound do talk with the adoption agency about the comming baby - a few greys are not good with babies.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pekingese are great dogs with kids and need less exercise than average. They are small, sweet and quiet - perfect for the city and apartment life. Small dogs are a bit harder to housebreak than larger ones - definitely use a crate when you can't supervise them.
I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on tv.

Depends on what city you are in. If you are in the lower and or Coastal South where it is hot most of the year, look at Havanese. Since you say you want a low energy dog, do stay away from any of the Terriers, no matter how cute they look. Do some research on the American Kennel Club website, www.akc.org. I grew up on a farm and remember our dogs with love but you are right they would not be good for city life.

English Bulldog. They are people oriented, not dog/activity oriented. It will do whatever you do, be it romp in the park or sit on your couch. I have a bully, and she is the best companion, no matter what I do! She will walk up to a mile when the weather is nice (I have trained her to do this, don't ask an outofshape bully to walk that far). She will also spend three days on the couch with me when I am out with the flu. I have spend a lot of time visiting NYC...my favorite part of the day is going to Union Square dog walk and playing with everyone else's bulldogs!!! As always, please research whatever breed you're leaning towards. For your benefit...and the dog's!

Greyhounds, Italian greyhounds or whippets would make great pets. Their very fast couch potatoes. Just a free run in a fenced park once a week is great for them, but they do like to go for a daily walk like all dogs. But this breed must be on a leash or in a fenced area at all times. Also Basset Hounds, Chihuahuas, or any of the "Toy" breeds would be good.

This may seem unlikely but whippets (sort like small versions of greyhounds) make great city pets. They have two speeds. Couch potato and 40 mph. If you take them on a walk, especially if there is a place to run for 15 minutes, daily they are all set. See link below.

french bulldogs are great with children and require minimal excersise. sometimes vet bills can be pricey though and so can the cost of a puppy. this question also depends on how much room you have and how willing you are to excresise your dog as well as how much time you want to spend grooming your dog... there are lots of great breeds out there as well as mixes in the shelters that all work well in the city. heck great danes are good apartment dogs if you don't mind sharing your bed and couch :)
