Even if you don't speak English you still have to show up.

Some things that get you out of it are:
-if you are over a certain age...like maybe 65 or something
-if you have young children (my mom has gotten out of like 2 jury duties because of this)
-if you are pregnant
-if you are deathly ill
-if you have purchases plane tickets are something like that for that day (but you usually get the notice early enough in the mail that htis isn't an issue)

You shouldn't try to get out of it. It's really not that bad. I had to go this past January. Just bring a book or magezine, or your homework if you are in school.
And do NOT bring a CD playear or I-pod or MP3 player. They don't usually allow them in the building.

When you're called for jury duty, the paperwork will list the situations where you can be excused. Doctors and lawyers are frequently excused. Small business owners with no employees may get a bye in some jurisdictions. Sometimes you can be excused if you have non-refundable airline tickets that conflict with the court docket. Be prepared to show proof of your situation. Without it, you won't be excused. Except for professional excuses (back to the doctors and lawyers) it will only delay the inevitable; you will be called again.

Work excuses will virtually NEVER get you excused. People get sick all the time and business continues just the same. One woman showed up with a letter from her employer stating that she would be fired (very illegal) if she did not show up for work. The judge told the bailiff to get that guy into the courtroom PRONTO. He showed up about 3 hours later and the judge read him the riot act; poor bastard nearly crapped himself. She served on the jury for over 2 weeks -- and still has her job; her boss is terrified of firing her.

I've served on several juries. Listening to some of the excuses was a real hoot, and most of them didn't work. It's interesting duty and you meet some very interesting people.

I would love Jury Duty, really. Anything to do with Court is a-okay with me. I served on a federal jury about 1 years ago. When I get a jury summons there's a little space to put your occupation and where you work. I work for an attorney in this county and I am a paralegal. I always get excused. They don't want people who know the law-they aren't easily led.

It would have to be a really serious illness. My own attorney could not get out of jury duty. The don't show up will get you arrested - they issue a bench warrant for no shows. Do the right thing & go down to serve on a jury, good chance they will not pick you. My husband has been picked 4 times & has never served. My brother got out of it, but he had been murdered 3 months earlier.

There is never a good excuse to get out of jury duty. Suck it up and do your civic duty. It is the (small) price you pay for having freedom.

Jury duty is your responsibility as a citizen. If it conflicts with something else that cannot be changed just ask to have it delayed for a couple of weeks. Note - a lot of time it just gets canceled.

Unless you have the type of job that is difficult for you to be gone (like a teacher, doctor, etc.) then you should go. If everyone always shirked their duty to be on a jury, we'd really be in trouble. In fact we are, I remember a reporter showing how many actually skip it and who really is on a jury. My ex mother-in-law for one! Believe me, you don't want her making any decisions for you as a juror!!!

You have to be in the hospital or dead not to show up at all. If you don't want to get picked for a jury, show them that you are prejudiced one way or the other. Like if you say you believe anyone who is arrested for anything is probably guilty, the defense attorney will want to excuse you.
