God allows all types of bad things to happen to bring glory to his name. plain and simple.
you ask an interesting question. I'm figuring that you know someone who is disabled, you, your child, a friend/family member or their child.
keep in mind that God does everything for a reason, even though we do not understand, it will inevitibly (??) bring glory to his name. watch the disabled child and see if they do not seem happy and slightly carefree. in all that disability, they have ability to praise God, because they know he loves them.

An understanding, caring and compassionate god would not allow these children to be born that way. If, and I stress the IF part, there is a god he's having a blast watching us all suffer. A supreme being like god would not allow starvation, murder, homelessness, natural distaters, etc... that is why I belive he does not exist!
edit: a few posts down from this it says "just because someone has a disablility does not mean they cant live a happy full life. "
you've hgot to be kidding me right. How bout you put yourself in their shoes. Try going to school with a disability and dealing with all the kids pointing and saying things about you. Try getting a job when you are older. Try leading a normal life.

First no, no one did anything wrong,
Take the example of the blind man in the bible, he was born blind just so Christ would have the opportunity to heal him.
But remember that God allows man his free will and allows him to sin, part of this result in sin, has been at times problems with DNA and birth defects and disablilities.
And God next did not promise things would ever be perfect on this world after the fall from Eden. Life was to be hard, tough.
And often part of that is either having the disability or living with the person who has it.
But often it is a opportunity to do something for God, to over come inspite of it.
Americans are the people who always want to blame someone, so ok, blame adam and eve for not staying in the garden and allowing satan free reign on this earth.
But beyond that, you accept and live life the way you get it, and deal with it in the proper manner according to your faith.
Blaming someone is not part of anyones faith, it is a result of lack of it.

First of all, I want to say that I agree in parts of other answers, mainly that there IS a reason. Also that it won't be easy, no matter the way you see it. But... and this is where I prompt, it is not supposed to be easy or good, least of all, perfect.
The way you ask, tells me that you grew up in a christian and/or conservative family, who always expect things to be good for them, and challenges that we are so used to call "tragedies" should always happen to the neighbor, but no to us. Guess what? We all are someone's neighbor.
Life is not supposed to be easy. The one who told you so was wrong. As a long time agnostic and for the few past years eclectic wiccan, I believe in reincarnation and kharma. So if someone is to blame, sorry, this may hurt, that is yourself. But NOT in the way one usually does.
You see, we live many lives and we're supposed to learn different lessons in each of them. All that we do has consequences, and sometimes, by mistake or just not having all the facts, we make wrong decisions. Maybe in a past life (50 or 500 years ago), you caused pain unto others, and this is the time to balance that by having you and your child to struggle through this situation.
In my coven, it is said that this particular situation happens because of both, the child and the parent(s) kharma. You and your child have lessons to learn and / or bills to pay back to life. Just like when you get your credit card balance and you see you spent more money than what you earn. It won't be easy, but somehow, you will have to deal with it ,and just hope that sometime, in this life or the next, you'll do better.
Finally, I would like to share with you that I used to think the way someone else anwsered to this question, that a good God would not allow this things to happen. Now I believe 2 things:
1) God (or Goddess, in my case) is not necesarily good. God is beyond human concepts of good and evil; and
2) All things happen with God's preknowlegde and aproval, as bad as they may look to our human eyes. You see, if you get to the point where God is not necesarily good in a human way, and has preaprooved things before they happened, you get to the point that all that we call "evil" is not so, we just don't (and won't) understand the ultimate purpose of God (or Goddess, I insist) by allowing them.
I truly hope that this answer may be of help.
May Mother Goddess bless you (in a way you can understand).

One cannot explain the problem of (any) evil, including that which you have mentioned, without limiting the monotheistic god. People don't like to limit god, so watch out asking intelligent questions like that- they don't like that at all and they start talking about free will, which still does not explain the problem of evil. If god is omniscient, omnipotent, just, and loving, there is no way this and all the other crap would happen to us. simple.
Many people cannot accept that "stuff" just happens- because of coincidence, modern medicine, etc etc. so they look to the almighty bible to explain that which they don't get or don't like. Problem is that the good book does not provide any real answers let alone an answer to the problem of evil. But we can always make sumpin' up and "prove" it with the bible!

I believe that you are looking at this with very terrene eyes. It does not work that way. It is very difficult for a father to understand it, but the answer might be that nobody did anything. Besides, ALL OF US have defects, sometimes invisible to others, but no less real.
Being born with disabilities is a great challenge, but some people with disabilities have overcome them to be great people. Look the case of Helen Keller

People are born with a disability that is much worse that a physical disability. All are born with a spiritual disability caused by sin which created a division between man and His Creator. Fortunately this disability doesn't have to be permenant. Is it possible that this may be you?

It could be any number of reasons. Could be something the parent did...could be to make the child a stronger person in spirit...could be for the parent to learn a lesson that they need to learn (compassion, love, patience, strength, etc..)...the answer is infinite. It could also be for the purpose of turning the parent toward God. Different things trigger different people. But make no mistake...there is a reason.

The ultimate answer to this difficult question is that when Adam and Eve sinned (Genesis chapter 3), they brought evil, sickness, disease, and death into the world. Sin has been wreaking havoc on the human race ever since. Birth defects occur because of sin...not because of sins the parents or the baby have committed - but because of sin itself. The hard part of the question is why God allows people to be born with terrible birth defects and/or deformities. Why doesn't God prevent birth defects from occurring?
The book of Job deals with the issue of not understanding why God allows certain things to occur. God had allowed Satan to do everything he wanted to Job except kill him. What was Job’s reaction? “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15). “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised” (Job 1:21). Job didn’t understand why God had allowed the things He did, but he knew that God was good and therefore continued to trust in Him. Ultimately, that should be our reaction as well. God is good, just, loving, and merciful. Often things happen to us that we simply cannot understand. However, instead of doubting God's goodness, our reaction should be to trust Him. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Ultimately, the answer to this question has to be “I don’t know.” We will never be able to fully understand God and His ways. It is wrong for us to presume on why God allows something to occur. We simply have to trust that He is loving, good, and merciful – just like Job did – even when the evidence seems to indicate the opposite. Sickness and disease are the result of sin. God provided the “cure” for sin in sending Jesus Christ to die for us (Romans 5:8). Once we are in heaven, we will be free from sickness, disease, and death. Until that day, we will have to deal with sin, its effects, and its consequences. We can praise God, though, that He can and will use birth defects and other tragedies for our good and His glory. John 9:2-3 declares, "His disciples asked Him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned,' said Jesus, 'but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life

Some are born with physical disabilities, some are poor, some don't have a loving family nor true friends, you name it. God gives us all these problems we need to deal with them and learn from them, they're not punishments or curses.
