I am a beginner and do not play a lot...yet. I would love to get into the sport, but always have a hard time with regular clubs. I top the ball constantly. How should I buy clubs, not knowing for sure I will be golfing for the rest of my life?

At your height. I would recommend at least 1" over length and 2 degrees upright. Depending on your athletic ability...Stiff shaft. You can find a used set built to those specifications at a variety of places. Or you can by a new set at a pro shop. On or off course. They will make an immense difference in your ability to make contact. They will "fit" you better.

Many places have "demo sets". Try one at a range. If you do better and are liking the game. Invest in a series of lessons to learn the fundamentals. If this is not in your price range...find an instruction book and teach yourself. Be careful not to read from too many different advisers. Pick one and stick with it. There are some good videos out as well.

If you have the bucks and are going to be playing the game a lot-yes. If you're like most of us, you'll get bored of the game, because you will not do well and no one likes to lose. It would be a waste of money. The next time you go to play, talk to the club's golf pro
and ask him to rent you a larger set of clubs.
When you finish the game, ask yourself " Do
I really wanna do this"? "Did I really have fun
today?" Do you really want to do it, or are you being pressured to do it by someone else, or a group of other guys, so that you can belong to an elite social club. If you truly are not having fun, you truly don't want to be the guy who is laughed at every time you go out with the guys. There are hundreds of other hobbies you can have fun doing- and that's the name of the game! F U N

No, I wouldn't suggest it right off the bat. I am 6'7 and played with standard clubs until this summer. You just need to get a little more flex in your legs and that should get you down to the ball, plus it will help promote good rotation on your swing. Once you decide that you like the game, then you might want to consider custom clubs then.

Well my father is also 6'5", and a really good golfer, but he had always felt that he had to reach down to the ball at address. So he went and had all of his irons lengthened 1-1/2 inches, because your woods should be at an ok length. He is now hitting the ball further and more accurately, so that would be my suggestion. Also, it is not that expensive to do, it cost him $60, but that was for new grips to go with the extension inserts.

Of course you would have to have them fitted for you. But it is very expensive, so defiantly make sure you want to do this. After I got my first set of custom clubs I could really tell a big difference in my game, the way they felt, and especially my long game. If was great. I am now on my 3 set and keep finding different needs, so as my game grows, so do my clubs.

Height and wrist-to-floor measurements are only good for a starting point in determining the length of a golf club. Your ball-striking ability has the final say. Length, lie angle (important for accuracy with irons, especially in the shorter ones), grip size, swing weight, shaft flex and total weight are all factors that need to be considered. If anything, at least get the lie angles checked and altered (if applicable).

So yeah!

The average, or above average (height) clubs are not made for a man of your height. You should definitely look into custom-made clubs.

I'm not sure what your golf game is like, but the right clubs will definitely improve your game.

Don't buy them until you know that you are going to stick with this very expensive sport.

ABSOLUTELY! Every golfer should be fitted for clubs, but especially someone of your stature. There are places that will fit you for free.
