An avocado will ripen if left out on a counter. Don't put in refrig it stops the riping process. It will get soft to the touch.

Put the avocado in a brown paper bag along with a banana. Fold the bag closed and put it in a dark, cool place. The banana releases a gas that helps the avocado ripen a little quicker. This method will help ripen just about any under-ripe fruit (peaches and nectarines immediately come to mind.) As the others said, never put an unripe avocado in the refrigerator. Doing so will arrest it's development!

Hass avocados, the best for guacamole, uually turn black on the outside as they ripen. The best thing is try to buy them ripe. I know if you live in the uSA that is difficult, but buy the darkest ones you can. Avacado grwoers recommend squeezing both ends of the avocado at the same time if it gives but still feels slightly firm then it is ready. You can squeeze the sides also, but doing so risk damaging the fruit. You cannot "make" an avocado ripen. It takes patience.

Do not put them on the fridge, put them on a brown bag, after a couple days you will have a riped avocado.

I have had that problem before the stores sell them unripe and I wanted that guacamole! Now I plan ahead and tell myself I have to wait a couple of days for it so I don't get my taste buds all ready for it.

Put them on a window sill in indirect light. Keep an eye on them and feel them , they will ripen quickly and turn black, if you don't, check them.
