During the Spanish-American War in 1898, we helped Cuba gain their freedom (we also annexed Guam and the Philippines during this time). As a part of Cuba's written constitution dating back to the end of the war, the US could install bases in Cuba that could not be removed without consent of both Cuba and the US. There were originally three bases we established, but only one (Guantanamo) remains in Cuba today.

And Orlando57 brings up a good point about the USS Maine. When investigators (both Spanish and American) took a look at the explosion shortly after it happened, they actually found the the Spanish probably did NOT attack the ship in the first place. That has led many historians to believe that the US blew up the ship so we could lay fault on Spain and have an excuse to go to war with them. We wanted to remove Spain's presence from the Caribbean, and we also wanted cheaper access to Cuba's sugar at the time.

This territory was USA prior to Cuba's Castro. We retained the rights to this land. If Cuba reneged, the US would probably take measures to insure we kept this base.

US dislikes Castro, not the Cuban people or Cuba itself. Cuba is only 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

It has nothing to do with the Communists. We have had that base since we liberated Cuba from Spain in the Spanish American War.

We don't go off base they don't come on.

simple a long time ago about 1900 we had a ship there in the port of havana and the spanish had a revolutionary cuban movement trying to throw them out and we used the explosion of our ship the maine as an excuse to fight and defeat the spanish all around the world and then we kept a few bases in cuba and helped them elect our favorite cubans president as a bonus for beating off the oppressive spaniards and thats why we retain a small part of cuba

We was just fooling around with your head. The USA had a agreement with Cuba before Castro for a base at GITMO.

It helps to keep Russians or Arabs from building a base there. Castro is a whore.

Its also a good place to keep criminals who cannot be trusted in decent society. It keeps other members of their criminal culture from freeing them.
