I used to be a server. I remember mostly black people left lousy tips. People are individuals and so some black people left very good tips but on average, they left less than white people. Mexicans mostly left less. A lot of times it is not that these people are cheap but that they grew up thinking that 10% is a good tip so they leave 10%. Every British table I had was super nice and complimented everything and was very gracious but they would always leave 10% no matter what. That is what they learned. It sucks to get less than 15 or 20% when you give good service but to a lot of these people, leaving you 10% is leaving a lot. So don't take it personally, they might leave you $3 on a $50 check but they would leave an average server $2.

Your restaurant should imply an automatic gratuity when there are a certain amount of people in the group, it's usually parties of six or more. They think that they paid that much to eat, that you don't need a tip. But of course you don't see that money. Some people don't realize that most of your pay is directly from the tip. Sometimes your service can be excellent and they don't care, they just throw a couple dollars on the table, but as soon as something minor goes wrong they are all over your *ss! I respect waiters and waitresses, because I always think that I could not handle that job. You bust your butt your whole shift and people don't pay up.
Someone mentioned that maybe they can't afford it. If they can't afford to leave a decent tip, then they should eat somewhere where they can afford it.
So to all you bad tippers, if you are to cheap to tip, then go to McDonald's or leave your rude, cheap butts at home!

Why are some of you people so quick to put a certain race or group all in one basket? What the hell does tipping in a resto have to do with what color a person is? Nine out of ten times white people are the worst tippers no matter the service. I have sat in restos and watched black people, including myself, leave $10 and more tips, while another person (white, ) leaves 25 cents or nothing. I have also watched my ex-husband try to walk away from a resto without leaving a tip or try to leave $2. It's the individual, not the race he or she is from. Think before you talk!! Because a couple of people may have pissed you off with a lousy tip (for which you have every right to be), don't go labeling others.

Sorry to hear that you experienced cheap tippers and that you have characterized people of African-American & Hispanic decent that way. Most people dont know that food servers only get a low wage and are extremely dependent on tips.
I used to work in the hotel industry and no one hardly ever leaves a tips for the housekeepers. So, I can understand your distaste for cheap tippers although I cannot condone your racial characterization.
Some general guidelines for tipping:
Restuarants: 20% at restaurants for great service.
15% for average service
0 to 10% for poor service.
Hotels: $1 to $2 per person per day for the housekeepers.
$5 at check out. Bell hops get $1 per light bags and $2 per heavy bag. Concierge: $5 for a great restaurant recommendation.
If someone cannnot afford a tip, then they need to move to a lower class restaurant.

I have heard that women tip less generously than men. If what you say about other ethnicities is true as well, perhaps it's because these groups--women and ethnic minorities-- traditionally make less money than white men for the same work? Just a thought...

Maybe YOU think you gave "awesome service", but didn't. Its obvious that you have a warped sense of judgment.
I personally pay for the service. If you gave good service, then you will get 18%. If you were less than helpful, you will get a negative comment card.

First of all you are are very ignorant person. Your question stereotypes people and it does not matter who you are or your culture nobody likes giving tips. You need to travel the world gain knowledge before you pass a comment like that again.
