Sauerkraut was a german food popular in the US, first with German immigrants, but of course it had showed up on our hot dogs & such. For a farm boy from 1940 missouri that was about all you knew about Germany.

They got the name from Sauerkraut! it was the most recognized German food that all Americans knew about!
