I used Raid...lots of it. It doesn't kill the eggs so treatment took time. Also treat the pets with ADVANTAGE that you buy from the vet. Other readers suggestions are probably good but they don't squish easily and if you have a real investation that won't solve anything. Another thing I've done is put out pans of water with a few drops of dish soap all over the house near a nightlight. The fleas jump in it and die. Also, keep in mind that the fleas do NOT lay its eggs on the pet, so more than the pet needs treated.
By the way, most infestations start when people return home from vacation. This is because the lifecycle is such that the larval stage doesn't produce the fleas until there is a food source. The movement (vibrations) of a family returning from vacation can set them all loose at once. So during treatment for the infestation remember to vacuum a lot to speed up the cycle. I always put flea powder in the vaccuum too because if they don't die in the vacuum they can get out...or you can change the vacuum bag every time you use it.

Flea killing shampoos for pets, people will not have to do anything. Get the people and pets out of house for a day, and use a specially labeled brand of flea killing pesticide for the rooms. Make sure that all treated surfaces dry before re-entry. Use of a flea growth regulator controls fleas for the long term.

If you have a really bad problem, I'd try the bug bombs. Just remember that they leave a residu. Then you are in there with all that poison and so are your dogs.
Lesser problems can be handled by vacuuming and then sprinkling some 20 Mule Team Borax on the carpet.
I use a topical, Bio Spot, on my dogs and have not had a flea problem in 10 years. It is over the counter. The vets sell Frontline and Advantage.

Anything with Pyrethrin or Permethrin as the main ingredient will kill fleas. Your best bet is to go to your local farm cooperative and find it in powdered form, as they have (or used to) some that will actually kill the flea eggs. You can use Lice Bedding Spray for certain places that can't be reached easily by bombs or are especially infested, as the one of the two chemicals above are usually their main ingredients.
On dogs and cats, you will be surprised what Dawn dishwashing liquid and Johnson's Baby shampoo will do, without harming your animals.

I recall the trick is doing like a 3 stage treatment. You have to do it is stages because flea eggs can survive practically anything. So you do one treatment to kill the adults, then treat again like a week later to get the new hatch, then like one more week later to get the next hatch. You might research how long it takes a flea egg to hatch and use that to time your treatments. Don't forget the yard and the dog/cat. I've found Frontline works good on my dog and cat.

It depends.. flea foggers. bombers work good.. one in every bedroom and 1 in each living area every 6-12 months.. it'll cost less than $20 if you have a small house. If you have pets make sure you get drops and treat them monthly to avoid infestation. They also make sprays to use around the outside of the home for prevention.
