There is more pain in imagining it over and over again. Stop it. That is why I always press my phobic patients to get some work done right away. So they keep their imagination in check. If you hear that is way in the back of your mouth and the needle is an inch long will it make you feel better? Just think about squeezing the assistants hand, the music playing in the background, and the outcome that you can control.

Injections are made in the "hinge" part of your jaw and also into the area around the bottom near your tooth (where the roots are). They are not very painful because you will feel the dentists finger in there pressing down and that is his way of making you not feel the injection. You will more than likely have approximately 3 - 4 shots per side. The more shots the less you will feel of the teeth being extracted. If they are full-bony impacted you may want to consider being put under which involves a needle in your arm. You will sleep through the entire ordeal. Hint: When you have the extractions done, a few things to help you are: (1) put ice on for 20 min. at a time. (2) DO NOT SMOKE!!!! You will end up with dry socket and you have never known such pain!! (3) Sleep sitting up if possible for the first night. That will help to keep swelling down because the blood can't lay in the pockets. (4) Do NOT suck anything through a straw. You will pull out the clots that need to form for it to heal. (5) Buy Carnation Instant Breakfast. You will need something to keep your stregnth up because you won't be able to eat for at least 4 days. Stock up also on pudding, applesauce, jello, instant mashed potatoes, etc. Anything you don't have to chew. Try not to eat anything hot, luke warm is fine. And last but not least....if the bleeding isn't stopping after 2 hours, wet (with warm water) 2 regular tea bags and GENTLY put them on the areas and GENTLY bite down on them making sure you don't tear a hole in the bags. Something in tea actually helps clot the blood and will help it heal faster. Good Luck!

I needed four shots, I had my four wisdom teeth extracted the same day. The fourth was the most bothersome, felt an ugly current in the gum, because that tooth was included. My cheeks were inflated and that was the worst part, not the extraction for me.
Morale: Don't know what you will feel but hope it is not too bad for you.

it is injected with a big needle into the gum area around the teeth. it doesnt really hurt you just feel a little pinch. if they are pulling 2 on opposite sides they will give you a shot in both sides. its not that bad though.

I had my left and right sides taken out at different times (for insurance reasons). You should get multiple shots in the gums on all sides of the tooth for each side. The shots are not painful...more like a pinch.

I had all 4 pulled at once. I didn't get any novocaine. They "put me under" for the whole thing. I had a general anesthetic.
