I have for about two weeks, but it was not a result of whey protein.

I started working out after a long 2 month break. I took whey to maintain the last of my muscle mass that could have been lost during re-entry into weight lifting. When you re-enter an exercise program, or start a new one, you tend to overstress your different systems, as well as your metabolism. The stress causes large secretions of cortisol, a hormone that when produced in excess, it will cause your body to catabolize your muscle tissue for fat production.

This causes a sudden drop in weight, but many times causes a loss of lean body mass. Once a new trainee's system adapts to the stress inflicted by the exercise, your hormones will then reverse the previous situation by promoting muscle growth and using the energy stored in fat cells for them.

When growth hormones cause your muscle cells to reproduce, they will begin using proteins and carbs, as well as water, to increase the size and quantity of your muscles, usually resulting in a gain of lean mass.

If you are losing weight by taking in whey supplements, then you could either be using a very good exercise program that is causing massive fat loss and gains in lean body mass, or, you are on an unusual diet. If it is your exercise program, you should begin to gain weight at some point, but not size. This is an increase in lean body weight. If not, then you may be over exercising.

As for the diet, whey protein is generally directed towards those who are looking for gains in lean body weight, or muscle mass, and cannot consume enough protein in regular food without unnessential nutrients or high calories, or, they just want easy access to more protein.

Loss in weight is expected in new exercise programs, but whey protein is designed to prevent or minimize that over time.

using whey protein (specifically after exercising) is a good way to gain muscle mass; it is not a product specifically for "weight loss." and in fact, with increased muscle mass you will actually weigh MORE because muscle is heavier than fat. but a side effect of gaining muscle will be a higher metabolism which will ultimately burn more calories. with regular use you will find that you have more strength and energy during your workout routines.

i use whey protein in my oatmeal every morning, as well as with water after a workout. i've been really impressed with the results.
