People assume that the followers of a religion understand the beliefs of the religion and are practicing them. Of course many people follow a religion however do not really understand it or really follow it.

If people simply practiced Love thy neighbor as yourself then the world and all in it would be in a much better place.

The reason people judge a religion according to its followers is best expressed by a trite but true statement:

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

Take Islam, for example. I've heard that Islam is supposed to be a loving, peaceful faith. Well, something in that loving, peaceful faith is inherently flawed because that loving, peaceful faith can breed extremists who love killing people with bombs. Do we see crazed Catholics, Methodists, Buddhists, or Pagans bombing everyone? No, we see crazed Muslims.

Same thing with Christianity. Christianity is supposed to be a peaceful, loving faith. People are told that God loves them unconditionally, but only if they follow a certain set of rules, which in turn makes God's love conditional, but the Christians say that if that doesn't make sense to you, it's because you don't have enough faith.

Some faiths don't even follow their own rules. Again, take Christianity for example. When Jesus, the Messiah, was born upon the earth, that fulfilled the Mosaic Law. The laws that Moses gave his people were no longer in effect. Jewish people, who don't believe that Jesus was the Messiah, still follows these laws, which is why they still eat kosher. Anyway, for Christians, Christ coming to the earth negated the Mosaic Laws. What modern-day Christians do not realize is that the Ten Commandments were part of the Mosaic Law. The Ten Commandments only apply to Jews. When Jesus travelled around the countryside, teaching his message, he said that he had only two commandments for his followers: love thy God, and love thy neighbor. Two very simple rules, but most Christians can't even follow those. They may excell at loving God, but not at loving their neighbors.

The rules of any religion look good on paper, but the practical application of those rules is what we should use to judge the merit of any faith.

because when we do something good for others that we are trying to show the Christ in us, it makes us feel good when people are helped and they thank us. Herein is the problem, we should turn their attention directly back to Jesus by saying, Praise the Lord or It's not me but the Christ that is in me that allow me to do this or that for you. Instead we take the Glory by just saying 'thank you' thus the person that had been helped thinks it was because of some kind of good we posses and they look at us for answers and help. When anyone looks at each other closely you will see we all sin at one point or another and stand in the need of forgiveness from our Heavenly Father. Not being a Christian and not knowing to keep their eyes on Jesus, when we as ppl can no longer supply there needs they say we failed them.
therefore it is important to teach that what you do comes from God. the Bible says 'all good things are of God'. That way when their needs can not be met they will look to God for hope and strength and answers.

Feed a man, and you've fed him for a day
but
Teach a man to fish then you've fed him for life

so teach people that Jesus is the source of your help and that is why you are able to help them. Ultimately, the help people crave deep inside can only be given by the Father in Heaven. We all must have a personal relationship with God.

I guess its ignorance, or lack of will to find out.
I think its sad that certain instances like a snapshot in history can come to represent a whole religion.
For example the Holocaust which some say Christianity should be very very apologetic for causing because Nazi germany claimed to be Christian. Anyone who has applies any kind of objectiveness can see that there was more to it driving Hitler than being Christian when the Nazis gained power and concentration camps started. Oh and theres the small matter of his violation of "do not kill" for so many years.
Are they holding up Hitler was the perfect example of a Christian and that texts as such should be judged by what he did? that is just so irrational to me!

Are you suggesting that people do not follow the rules of their own religion?

If that's the case, why bother studying the rules if no one follows them?

because they are clsoed minded, blind(not physcally, but mentally) they choose what to believe. I was clsoeminded myslef about the faith I now embrace, then when i learned more about the religion itself the people began disappearing & I focused on the true meaning.
