An intercooler cools the air charge after it is compressed by a turbo or a supercharger, allowing for more boost and timing without detonation.. As far what to get...depends on the car.

An intercooler keeps the air cooler. Turbos give off masive heat and heat is bad for turbo cars. Your car has a small side mounted intercooler from the factory, and it works well for normal driving and low boost. If your jetta is modded i.e. chip your best bet is to get a bigger front mounted intercooler "FMIC". Most company who tune VW's have kits you can install. These kita have the correct size FMIC for your car, so you don't have to figure that out. Check out the sites I put on here.

The intercooler provides cool air for better power and preformance. The colder the air,the more oxygen molecules you can force into the fuel air mix.More oxygen, better burn.vwjcook@yahoo.com

Cold air is more dense so it mixes better thus burns better when mixed with fuel. So car companies use them to cool the air from the turbo. Your car has one already so going bigger would not help unless you did other modification.
