Although this may not sound very "scientific" in my experience older cats and dogs will sometimes develop coat problems as a side effect to internal problems. I worked with an Internal Medicine Specialist for several years and when we would interview clients they often mentioned a poor or unkept coat on their pets. I asked him about this and he felt that an animals' body will often divert energy from maintaining low priority area like the coat and nails to compensate for other organ systems which require more.

Since it is an "elderly" cat I would recommend visiting your veterinarian for a Senior Wellness Exam - which takes into consideration the needs of the older pet. Any cat or dog over the age of 7 should get this type of exam on an annual basis.

Good Luck.

You should be brushing her/him with a soft bristle brush and combing the fur. The dandruff is called dander and is really dry flakey shedding skin. Is your cat a good groomer? Sometimes cats get that from not grooming or being able to reach spots if they are overweight. There are special foods you can get from the vet or pet store like Petsmart that help promote healthy, shiny coats of fur. Try to brush your cat 2-3 times a day. There are also dry shampoo wipes you can buy and different fur cleaners that help allergens that work well with ridding pets of dandruff. If these things don't work, have your vet look your cat over, as there could be a parasitic or health reason the coat is flakey.

frontline available from the vet will get rid of dry skin, it will make it flake worse till it all comes off though, it could be a skin infection though which this will not fix...

diet? sometimes cats nutritional needs change as they age. the food they have been eating may not be giving it enough of what they need. dull coat is a sympton.
