US is afraid. Basically, the US is a big bully that likes to butt into other people's buisness. They ensure that no one in the world has the same nuclear weapons as they do. If they suspect that you may be attempting to invent weapons... they will attack you. Simple as that. They are afraid that someone will get a bigger military...or have better weapons and defeat them.
They like to keep people scared so that they can get better deals. If you had an oil well and the US set a military base right outside it and woudln't let your oil pass unless you agreed with all their terms and conditions...what would they be??? This is ACTUALLY happening.

This issue isnt as clear cut as the above answers have made it, the US is criticizing China for its military spending TRANSPARENCY rather than the spending itself. Since China's military spending is going into this dark box it makes super powers curious (what is dark and unknown implies danger). So what the US is asking China to do is to make there military spending transparent to the world so that the world does not take the increased mysterious spending as a hostile action.

It's not so much that they're criticizing China's military spending, but questioning why there has been such an increase lately. The country is very secretive and it's hard to tell the difference between reasonable security increases and a possible prelude to expansion.

Because the USA has been tasked with maintaining order throughout the world, thereby requiring more money and forces to do such. (The UN has no power without US support since its inception, and is dependent on US troops to be the majority force on its peacekeeping mission.)
China is increasing its military spending in order to rival the US and to pursue its own interests to attempt to feed its citizens.
I don't believe that China is out of line in what it is doing, but I am concerned (not afraid...yet) that a new cold war will emerge and with a less stable/compromising government.

Hypocrisy... USA is also the only one to keep invading other countries
Funnily enough, even this doesn't make America confront China. We are so dependent on their cheap goods and corporations rule our policies so much that we just yap about it. In contrast we actually invade the Flintstones (i.e. Iraq)

as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, China spends far more on their military than does the US. Considering that China is fighting no wars, one wonders why they need to spend so much.

Because China is a totalitarian communist state... and an enemy of freedom. They are not currently at war and if they were to go to war the likely target would be Taiwan, a US ally, which China considers a renegade province.

because china is a communist country that could easily spread their influence through the use of force. of course they could never match the U.S. America is the most powerful nation in the world for a reason. the U.S. should take over the world, it would be such a better place.
