I once started a small community newsletter by testing the waters in a nearby lake and river for dissolved oxygen with a kit and reporting the results in it. It involved breaking the glass stem on small ampoules immersed in the body of water with some solution in them that was under vacuum. The water sample filled the ampoule and then turned a blue color which could be compared with the colors of a chart. The kits are cheap and easy to obtain. During one summer when some low readings were found a whole chain of events started with the State (Minnesota) helping to fund a waste water line for these lakes to stop septic leakage into them. If someone is not part of a fix to a problem they are part of the problem.

Marine life survive off of gasses in the water, that is how they breath. Their bodies are set up to metabolize the gasses through water, while ours are made to metabolize it through air.

They use it to breath, or for respiratory functions in general. This allows them to utilize energy and go on living
