Yes. I am a teacher and a mother. With single parents and both parents working, older kids are having to help with child care afterschool. Sometimes a child or parent's after school plans change, and a cell phone is a direct and quick way to reach each other. I do feel that cell phones should be on vibrate during class time so a student does not miss an important parent call. I also feel that students must not return calls in class, that they should have to wait until a lunch or home room time. Many schools do not have working payphones in them!! I have worked in a few that the phone hangs on the wall, but they do not get any service.

No. The school office has a phone and should have somebody available to answer it and page students if the parent needs to contact the child in the middle of the day. There is no genuinely compelling reason for a student to be using a cell phone during the school day.

That said, cell phones are kind of like knives -- they can be unobtrusive and effectively invisible for the vast majority of the time right up until they save or ruin somebody's day. (To be fair, you're more likely to be threatened with a razor than a RAZR.) So the limitation to not allowing cell phones in school would simply be "don't let me see it" -- because if it's not being a disruptive influence, then it's not causing a problem.

No! You are there at school to give your 100% attention to learn! Your friends should be at school too? If not why? There isn't any need for you to have a cell phone at school, everybody knows you are in "school" and shouldn't call you then anyway.
No question, absolutely not!

ust as adults and teens should not talk on their cell phones while driving. Because while we drive we already listen to music on the radio or change CD's while at the wheel, watch the road, watch other drivers, all the time munching on something or smoking a cigarette. With all this going on, your phone rings, you answer and get the low down on some friends event that just happened taking your mind away from the road completely. Then crash, oops, gotta hang up I just ran into someone at the stop sign!

No cells phones at school, or behind the drivers seat of a motor vehicle.

Absolutely. I know that it was absolutely necessary for me in high school because I couldn't drive. How else was I supposed to let my mother know that I needed a ride home because I had a club after school and my schedule changed without notice? After I got my license, I felt way more secure that I had the ability to call my parents if I ever got into a situation where I needed their help.
I do believe that cell phones should be off or on silent (vibrator doesn't count) during class. They can be disruptive during class. It's also kind of rude.

I don't see a problem with allowing cell phones in school but not in the classes. I believe cell phones should stay in their locker. If your school doesn't have lockers or you don't use one then no you shouldn't have a cell phone with you. Some people will cheat or not pay attention in class like texting each other: gossip, rumors, ANSWERS. So cell phones locker yes; class room no.

Yes because they have become a fact of life, however, there should be strict rules governing their use and abuse. No cheating via cell phone. No loud ringing in class. No disruptive talking in class. In fact, the cell phone would be best turned OFF in class.

The worst offenders, sadly, I hear, are PARENTS!! Quit coddling and constantly intruding on your kids! Cell phones are not meant to be an extension of some home gulag!

Kids have enough distractions in life without it having to be in the form of a cell phone in school.

No, I never had one when I was in school and the pay phone worked just fine in case of an emergency. I'm not saying I don't think kids should have cell phones.....I just don't think they need them in school.

Well why not they are everywhere else! Come on, people use them in the bathroom, in doctors offices, etc.

I think they should be allowed in school just not turned on in class or be used in class unless there is an emergency.

If people use good judgement and manners, who cares?

Yes, because I know parents want students to have them and there is no way for schools to regulate it. However I think students should not be allowed to take them to class. In the halls is okay
