you need to clean it out because the infection is gonna get worse, and it would be too painful for them -- they won't have the appetite to eat/drink milk... this has happened to me a bunch of times before. if i didn't clean it, and if i didn't open their eyes, they would be in so much pain and stop eating, then die eventually. vs. if i opened their eyes and treated it, they'd be ok. if you don't have the money for vet, at least ask him/her first what you can do. and i don't think this would cost you a lot of money.

neosporin is a topical ointment, It can be used on external scratches, sores, and abscesses. this medication is not for kittens eyes, yours either.
If you have a a vet you take your animals to call and see if he will dispense some terramycin opth. ointment this is an anti biotic made especially for feline eye infections.
There is a possibility you can be dealing with conjunctivitis or a upper respiratory infection.
take the kittens to the vets. he will probably be able to work out a payment plan on a monthly basis they are pretty good about this.

Jennifer F I suggest you do some research on neosporin before you give that type of advice.

Neosporin won't hurt it if it is just an eye infection, but runny eyes can be a sign of distemper, feline leukemia, a respiratory infection-- all sorts of things. I know you don't want to get rid of the kittens, but if you can't find someone willing to take payments or treat the kittens at a reasonable cost, wouldn't you be a better person for handing them over to more capable hands? I'm sure you love the kittens, but sometimes when you love something a lot you have to let it go.

If you could take 1 kitten you could say they all had it and get meds. I'm betting its the common type of eye thing they get when babies, crusty and watery, oozy. Hartz makes a moisturing eye gel, that soothes the skin around the eyes and promotes healing, you can get it a petstores or department stores like Walmart for about $6.00 Lots of times the momma cat will wash the kittens eyes and clean things up but sometimes they don't. You have to use a warm but not too warm, cotton clean cloth to wipe their eyes, clean off the icky stuff, then you can get the Hartz ophtalmique eye gel and dab some on, it won't hurt the momma if she does wash it or them off. If that doesn't clean things up within a 2-3 days, take one of them to the vet. An untreated eye infection can damage the vision and also spread if bad enough to the cats brain and kill them.

do not use neosporin in the eyes, as it isn't made to but in eyes. go to the drugstore and try polysporin drops made specifically for the eyes, make sure it is ok for use in eyes, if it doesn't say that do not use the product, you will only wind up damaging the eyes. cleaning the eyes daily and using polysporin drops 2-3 times per day should help and if it doesn't you have a more serious problem on your hands and break down and go to a vet. (the eyes will clear up in 3-4 days tops if it is going to work)
good luck.

is it just an eye infection or is it sneezing alot too? also could it have scratched its eye?? in any event i had this happen and the vet had a special salve for the eye. Neosporin is not to be used in their eyes, that's what my vet told me...If the eye could be scratched youll have to take it to the vet for it to be stained to find the scratch...the only thing safe to do with consulting your vet is to clean with a warm, moist cloth...

Don't use neosporin...if you can't afford a trip to the vet you can get Terramycin Ophthalmic Ointment, 1/8 oz. from www.medi-vet.com for $10.98. I would call your vet first, though and make sure that is what you need. Good luck.

Try wiping it with a warm damp cloth or try mullen. It works wonders. I have a kitten right now with the same problem, I wouldn't suggest using neosporin, you wouldn't use it in your eye, would you.

Give the kitten to someone who can afford to take care of it.
