720x480 is the standard resolution for a DVD. This is an aspect ratio of 4:3. Widescreen DVDs are also 720x480, but the 16:9 picture is compressed horizontally in software so it is 4:3, then stretched horizontally to 16:9 by the TV. Soon, high-definition DVDs will be available, probably 1920x1080 pixels.

NTSC DVDs are 720x480. PAL DVDs are actually 720x576. Most DVDs have a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second.
