These are all really terrific answers. One thing I benefited from (not only b'days, but Christmas too) was to tell my daughter that it was polite to ask Mom or Dad or Santa for 3 things. She really was ok with that, so she chose the 3 most important things she wanted, which incidentally turned out to be very inexpensive things like coloring books, crayons, and stickers. What's special is that you care enough to make sure your son is happy for his birthday. If you have (or know someone who has) one of those small kiddie pools, invite over a few kids, fill it up, swim away, and have a great time. Ask each child to bring one cake ingredient and have a cake baking party!! Let them stir, add eggs, milk, etc. End result being they get to eat their own creation!

There are tons of fun things to play at that age. Ring around the rosie, Musical Chairs, Duck duck goose, Red rover, Hokie Pokie...Kids love that stuff...and they're all free.

Don't fret mom. Your son's b'day will be great!! Just find a few simple things. Good Luck!!

Ask him what kind of cake he would like beforehand. Buy a bag of balloons. Decorate. Make him a big birthday crown to wear. Have a little bag of treats for each kid. Make up some games or contests with some little treat or toy for a prize Make them all play the games for an hour or so. You could cook burgers for them. Then sing happy birthday and have cake and ice cream. After desert, keep them busy by getting out the balloons and blowing them up to play with. You will be tired but he'll have a great day and the whole thing might cost you twenty or thirty dollars. Get him to help you clean-up afterwards so you two can talk and wind down a little.

You've received some great answers. It's easy to feel badly if you can't afford to do all the things you want to for your kids, but honestly, it's not good for kids to get "everything!" I never understood huge parties every year for kids anyway.

At 4, all the day needs to be super-special is cake, maybe some balloons (which you can get at the Dollar Store), some people he loves (friends or family, and it doesn't have to be a huge number of friends...two's plenty!). Play a few games and give prizes (little bags with crayons, stickers, etc...again from the Dollar Store).

Another idea is to think of one special thing that's always a treat for him to do but that he doesn't get to do often. This could be something as simple (and free!) as going to the park with a picnic!

You do not need to spend a lot of money to make his birthday special. You can have family over or let him invite just a couple kids over. Have cake and ice cream and play games. Hot potato, musical chairs, etc. There are a ton of games you can play that cost you nothing. Just get one pack of balloons and hang them up and it will look decorated. You could get a crown from burger king and cover it in foil so he is king for the day. It does not have to be the ordeal some parties are. Kids come to expect huge parties, which is absurd. They can have just as much fun with a well planned party at home!

Your not the only one who has this problem so dont feel bad. If your having a party at home ask your friends and family to all bring fun finger food look some up on line you can get stuff for party bags at the dollar store make your own cake and put some little dump trucks on top or some hot wheels cars. I think your family and friends will help pitch in if you explain whats going on and ask them to pitch in. I have and awesome game too, get some whip cream in a can and put it on the kids heads you can get cheap squirt guns at the dollar store to, have the kids squirt the whip cream off the kids heads its so funny to watch them, get a slip and slide only like ten bucks they like those to, kids love water play and its summer turn on the hose and let them rip. hope I could help

bake him a cake and get iceam. Let him invite all his friends over. Order them pizza. Thats cheaper than going to mcdonalds or bk for everyone. if money is really tight have the b-day on monday. Hungry howies has their large pizza for 4.99 that day. You can get up 10 not that you will need that manny if you get 3 large
pizzas for 4.99 + tax
that's around $17.00 and a cake you can get the mix and icing for $3.00 and some cheap icecream for $1.50
thats a party for 21.50.
You can get the pizzas and put them in the freezer till the party if you cant do it on monday.
Take him shopping for his present on payday.

My most memorable birthday was held at a local park. My parents invited my friends along and we had a homemade birthday cake and some kool-aid. My friends brought the gifts. My parents also made a cheap paper-mache pinata. It was loads of fun for a 6yr old.
