Seems to me like cultural bias. A "pasty white chick" who resides in Isreal ... somewhat illogical. If this is truly a "historical modification," it's not the first. Though Columbus was not the first person to "discover" America, Catholics engrained it into our national culture to retain a Catholic influence in Protestant America. I recall a book that suggested the Founding Fathers' economic interests superceded their other motives for founding this country. And, then, if you read the DaVinci Code, that poses an interesting and thoughtful idea as well.

The pictures and statues of the Virgin Mary are in no way related how she actually looked... It is simply an artist portrayal of her. If you actually want to see a real picture of her, and not soo pasty, check her portrait that is hanging in Mexico City's Cathedral... I have travelled there in person, and it is absolutely beautiful!

Of course those are no where near accurate, its the artists idea of what she looked like. The same with the paintings of Jesus, I never met a middle eastern Jew with blue eyes. Maybe some are out there, but highly unlikely

That is a very good question!
I've never thought about it but she doesn't look like a person from the area she was from....
I guess because we don't know what Mary looked like. So you have some pictures of Mary white and some black or Latin. and so on.
Just like the Jesus pictures.

WHAT ?? YOU'VE SEEN THE VIRGIN MARY ?? DO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY KNOW OF THIS ?? HAVE YOU CONTACTED THE VATICAN ?? WHAT MORE OF THIS EXPERIENCE CAN YOU SHARE ?? DID SHE IMPORT SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE TO YOU ?? WHY DIDN'T YOU CONSIDER ASKING HER THIS QUESTION ?? OR are you just simply making some lame *** comment about some replica rendering you've seen somewhere and are looking for cool points because you've glued two things together for the first time in your life ????

Because that was the medieval idea of a chaste virgin. Its very much not what she'd have looked like. The paintings of Jesus as well.

Because the people who painted her never actually saw her so painted her how they perceived her. That was often within the parameter of the painter's own culture (In the middle ages, wealthy European women would paint their faces white- it was the fashion).

That would depend upon where you go to church. I'm sure that in Hispanic churches, she looks brown, and in Black churches she looks Black. Of course, she should look like a middle-east chick - and I'm sure that in some churches she does.
