BevK has given you the best advice. Fleas are more serious for kittens because they are so small, a bad infestation can make him anaemic.
Your kitten will also need worming. All kittens are born with a few worms, and unfortunately fleas pass on tapeworm.
Both of these together can really make a young kitten quite ill if left untreated so please don't wait any longer.
The stuff you get from the petshop is more suitable for adult cats, but kittens are more sensitive and need specialist treatment; your vet is not ripping you off.
While you are there get him vaccinated; there are some diseases which are expensive and difficult to treat but easy to prevent by vaccination.
Remember to give him kitten food, not adult cat food, he will need the extra nutrition because you are also feeding the worms and fleas.

Don't buy Hartz flea treatments as they have been known to kill cats, and always make sure you check the label to make sure it's intended for cats rather than dogs.
The best treatment is Frontline though, which you can only get from a vet. You'll also need to vacuum your carpets and bedding thoroughly to get rid of all the eggs. Only the adult stage lives on the cat and the eggs can survive a while.

Take him to the vet. Some flea infestations are so bad they can actually cause severe boold loss in kittens. Make sure you vacuum the house a lot for a while.

I would take him to the vet for a shampoo and de-fleaing, then you know they got them all. Spray your house or bug bomb and vacuum carpets after to get any dead ones. You might get him cleaned up at the vets to bring him home to new infestation. You have to treat both ways, on the animal, and in the environment to get rid of them fully. If he doesn't go outside that should take care of things, if he does, he may pick up more and you should get him treated with proban or something to keep them off.

take him to the vets. They will be able to give you a flea wash and treatment suitable for his age. Don't buy stuff from the supermarket as it is just not effective on cats!

As he is very young, you really need to take him to the vet. He can find the best treatment for a very young cat, as grown-up ones are way too strong. He will also have the spray to do your carpets and furniture. Ask how to use it; vets are usually nice people!!

try the treatment first (since it is cheaper) then if you still have problems take him to the vet.
And after you get the fleas off him, dont let him go out or this could happen again.
