Check out www.akc.org to find a really good breeder. Go to dog shows and talk to a lot of people who own them. This is a dog that can either bring you twelve years of joy, or twelve years of nightmares. Get your puppy locally, where you can see at least one of the parents and make sure they have good temperaments. The breeder should ask you questions to see if you are a good candidate to own one - these are large, fast dogs that can be dangerous if not bred and raised properly.
Dobermans need a LOT of attention along with lots of exercise. Dobies are athletes - When full grown, you'll need to take her for daily thirty minute runs, not just a casual walk around the block. If you're not a jogger, train her to run next to a bicycle or get a doggie backpack and make her carry 10-15 pounds. You can also train her to use a home treadmill.
Dobies are very smart and very needy dogs that hate to be left alone. Until she gets used to being home alone, use a big crate like a #500 or #700 Vari Kennel when you go out. Dobies with separation anxiety can destroy your house or jump thru a window - I've seen one chew a hole entirely through an interior wall to get out of the room he was locked in.
The dog will bond with whoever trains it and spends the most time with it. They are the unique in that they would rather be punished than ignored - they'll whine or be a pain in the butt just to get you to yell at them. Begin training her as soon as you get her - don't waste those important months when the pup WANTS to listen and learn! Spend at least 15 minutes a day having fun obedience training sessions - HEEL SIT STAY DOWN COME. Teach her some tricks. Keep her brain busy!
I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites:
What All Good Dogs Should Know - Volhard
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

I have a male doberman 13 mos old, he is a great pet, kind to everyone including my little min pin and my cat. I beleive all animals
like people are the product of there enviroment so when people lable a breed as good or bad is a harmful opinion. Good luck on your search and try to research the backgound of the dog.

There are many good doberman rescue roups. Try google and type in doberman rescue they will pop up.
Look for something in your area.
Be sure you understand the training requirements of doberman. They are dominant assertive dogs and take a bery frim hand and lots of training time. If you are not in charge they will be and you will have problems. You need to be able to spend time working with the dog and you need to be consistant.
They are wonderful dogs I have ahd the for 17 years.

Any dog will be a good dog as long as it's trained. I've know some very nice dobermans and my hubby wants one. Try doing a pet search on the left hand side of http://www.petfinder.com Put in your zip and what type of dog your looking for and it will show you all the ones needing homes near you. That's how we found our dog.

The Doberman is a puppy that won't also be well at the same time residing along with your mum and dad.... you would be nice off ready till you progress out. I might see a golden retriever at the same time residing along with your mum and dad... however now not a dobe. My b/f's brother's g/f raised them for years.... they don't seem to be affraid to snap at any individual whilst their area is invaded. They are very protecting puppies. And they require undertaking and concentration. And it might be nice to get a dog- an older one might be set in it is approaches. They may also be elaborate. And your dad is correct... it might assault if provoked. So perform a little studying first. Don't simply bounce correct in with out figuring out what your coming into.
