What is the safest and quickest way to get there? Any "special" stops that a family must see on the way?

Interstate 10 goes straight from LA to West Texas, where you pick up I-20 straight into Dallas. That is the fastest, but is very (add about 12 verys) boring.

There are some interesting things along the way.

Just outside of Tucson is Saguaro National Park:

I would recommend getting of I-10 at El-Paso.
Take US 62 from El Paso (it becomes US 180 also)
to Carlsbad Caverns NP:

Along the way is Guadalupe Mountains NP:

From Carlsbad, get back on to US 62.
Just as you enter Texas, take Ranch Road 652 to US 285.
Head SE on US 285 to Pecos, and get on I-20.
Total detour is only around 50 miles.

Along I-20, you pass Midland and Odessa, which is where the current President spent part of his childhood and much of the 1970s and 1980s.

According to the website below, it will take about 21 hours to drive the 1,438 miles between LA and Dallas. That's if you take the freeway all the way. With a family, I guess you'll want to stop off at places like Phoenix and El Paso.
